Season 1, episode 3, “Long, Long Time,” gives the guarded survivalist and his unexpected partner a years-long relationship, a shared life, and a moving ending. A new show could explore other lives in this world, but no Bill-and-Frank series is established by the comments cited here.
Who are Bill and Frank in The Last of Us?
Bill is a wary survivalist who fortifies his town. Frank enters his life after triggering one of Bill’s traps. Their first encounter becomes a partnership, and the episode follows them through years of meals, music, ordinary companionship, and the dangers of life after the outbreak. TIME describes the episode as a deliberate shift away from Joel and Ellie toward the couple’s tender relationship: TIME’s account of “Long, Long Time”.
The story is not a conventional survival-adventure detour. Its drama comes from watching two people build a life and find meaning in a dangerous setting. When Frank becomes ill, he and Bill choose to die together.
What episode tells their story?
Bill and Frank’s story is “Long, Long Time,” season 1, episode 3 of HBO’s The Last of Us. The episode’s title comes from Linda Ronstadt’s song, which becomes a musical thread through the story. TIME reports that the song, from Ronstadt’s 1970 album Silk Purse, helps begin Bill and Frank’s bond and later accompanies Joel and Ellie after they find the couple’s note and vehicle: TIME on the episode’s music and story.

How does the episode differ from the game?
The television adaptation expands a brief, bleak part of the game into a substantial relationship drama. In the game, Joel and Ellie meet Bill while seeking help with a vehicle. Frank is already dead; dialogue and written clues suggest that his relationship with Bill ended bitterly. The HBO episode instead shows the pair meeting, becoming partners, and sharing years together.
| Aspect | The HBO episode | The game |
|---|---|---|
| How much of their story is shown | A long relationship and shared life | Bill and Frank’s past is conveyed briefly through the encounter with Bill and clues about Frank |
| Frank’s status when Joel and Ellie encounter Bill | The episode has already told the couple’s story | Frank is dead before Joel and Ellie meet Bill |
| How the relationship is presented | A partnership that lasts for years and ends by mutual choice | Clues imply a bitter separation |
| Story function | A standalone character drama that pauses the central journey | Part of the gameplay passage in which Joel and Ellie seek vehicle help |
That change gives the series room to explore what the game leaves largely offscreen. For more context on the adaptation and its choices, see The Washington Post’s interview with Craig Mazin.

Why Bill and Frank’s story works
Craig Mazin, the series’ co-creator and showrunner, described Bill and Joel as similar protectors who have shut themselves off from other people. Their different paths help make the episode more than a change of pace: Bill’s guarded life is set against the possibility of letting someone in.
Mazin also framed the episode as breathing space after the tension and tragedy of the first two episodes—and as proof that emotional success could still be possible in this world. Speaking to TIME, he said, “One of my goals was to show that there was a way to win.” The episode’s idea of “winning” is not defeating the outbreak; it is finding connection and a life worth protecting. In The Washington Post, Mazin put the episode’s underlying question this way: “We had a chance to ask: what happens when a character in this world is actually, relatively safe?”

Would a separate Bill and Frank series add enough?
The case for a spin-off is easy to make: Bill and Frank’s relationship has the emotional weight to carry a story, and their life together offers a perspective beyond Joel and Ellie’s journey. A series could, in theory, explore more of their years together or tell a different story about people trying to build community in this world. Those are possibilities, not announced plans.
There is also a strong argument against extending this particular story. “Long, Long Time” already gives the couple an extensive arc, from their meeting through their shared life to its ending. Continuing it risks making a deliberately complete story feel less complete. A new series set in the same world would not necessarily need Bill and Frank to be its focus.

Is a Bill and Frank spin-off confirmed?
No Bill-and-Frank spin-off is established by the available comments. In an interview published April 14, 2025, Mazin said he wanted to complete the story through the source material and move on, while also saying he would be glad to see other series set in that world: The Hollywood Reporter’s 2025 interview with Mazin. That leaves open the broad possibility of more stories in the setting; it is not an announcement of a show about Bill and Frank.
