Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Instigators has an appealing Boston heist setup and a strong central pairing, but its loose pace and thin intrigue keep the 2024 comedy from fully delivering on either. Calling it a “cinematic misfire” is a matter of critical judgment; its reception is mixed-to-negative rather than universally dismissive.
What is The Instigators about?
Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, The Instigators pairs Rory (Matt Damon), a desperate father, with Cobby (Casey Affleck), an ex-con. They are pushed into robbing a corrupt politician, but the job goes wrong and leaves them pursued by police, bureaucrats and crime bosses. Rory’s therapist, played by Hong Chau, gets pulled into their escape.

The ensemble also includes Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. Apple’s production announcement and film page frame it as an action comedy rooted in Boston and built around reluctant partners.
Does the cast overcome the film’s weaker momentum?
The film’s clearest strength is the contrast between Damon’s anxious Rory and Affleck’s more irreverent Cobby. Their mismatched energy gives the caper its best comic exchanges, and the Boston setting lends the story a familiar local texture. Producer Kevin Walsh has described the film as a “throwback” in the vein of Midnight Run; that is his comparison, not an official genre label.

The weakness is that the chase and the characters’ predicament do not consistently generate enough suspense or comic escalation. Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus similarly praises the pair’s “knucklehead rapport” while faulting the film’s lack of intrigue and pulse. Review excerpts on the site vary: some critics describe the story as predictable or inconsequential, while others value its cast and setting. The chemistry is real, but it cannot entirely compensate for a caper that often feels more laidback than involving.
How was The Instigators received?
On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 41% Tomatometer from 157 critic reviews and a 56% Popcornmeter from 500-plus audience ratings. These are live aggregator scores and can change; the critic and audience measures also reflect different groups, so neither should be treated as a fixed verdict or as a substitute for the specific praise and complaints.

Director Doug Liman told the Associated Press that the question was less whether a film was streamed or shown in theaters than what agenda a company had. He described Apple as a premium brand seeking aspirational movies in keeping with that brand. That perspective helps explain the film’s Apple-backed release, but it does not change the experience on screen: an engaging lead pairing in a story whose momentum is uneven.
