When Chicago-born Robert Prevost was elected Pope Leo XIV on May 8, 2025, the internet quickly recast the formal image of the papacy in familiar Chicago terms. The resulting jokes ranged from “Da Pope” and deep-dish communion to Bears gear and Blues Brothers references. Here are some of the sharpest reported examples—not an objective ranking, but a tour of the meme wave’s most Chicago-specific ideas.
Why “Da Pope” became the shorthand
“Ope, it’s a Chicago pope”
The simplest joke was also one of the most adaptable: put a Chicago accent on the papacy and call Leo XIV “Da Pope.” Some posts leaned into the familiar “ope” interjection; others paired the phrase with Bears imagery or the broad, boisterous style of the “Superfans” sketches from Saturday Night Live. The gag works because it swaps the Vatican’s formal register for a recognizable local voice.
Chicago pride, with a papal twist
Mayor Brandon Johnson offered a civic version of the same joke: “Everything dope, including the Pope, comes from Chicago.” It turns a boast about the city into a compact bit of wordplay, and captures the playful hometown pride that ran through many of the posts.
Chicago food meets the sacraments
Deep-dish Eucharist and better pizza in Rome
Food jokes imagined Chicago staples arriving at the Vatican. Axios recorded a reader’s line, “Finally Rome will have good pizza,” alongside a post riffing on “Deep dish eucharist.” The humor depends on an intentionally absurd collision between a sacred ritual and a fiercely argued local food identity.

Hot dogs, Italian beef, and Malört
Other posts imagined hot dogs in communion settings, Italian beef at the Vatican, or Malört standing in for wine. The Associated Press report republished by WTTW also described jokes about ketchup-topped hot dogs. These are comic inventions, not reports about Vatican practice or Leo XIV’s preferences.
Sports jokes: Bears, Bulls, and the Sox
Bears gear and Bulls-style entrances
Some memes dressed the pope in Bears or Bulls imagery; others imagined his entrance set to the music used for Bulls introductions. The contrast between solemn papal ceremony and unmistakably Chicago sports presentation gives these visual gags their punchline.

The Cubs–White Sox mix-up
Early posts speculated about Leo’s baseball allegiance, and the Cubs–White Sox rivalry supplied plenty of material. But the Washington Post later reported that the pope’s brother said Leo was “always a Sox fan.” That clarification is worth keeping alongside the jokes: Cubs-themed memes were part of the online reaction, not evidence of his actual loyalty.
Bears versus Packers
The Bears–Packers rivalry also offered a ready-made frame for Chicago pride. Like the baseball jokes, these posts draw on local sports shorthand; the joke is the imagined transformation of a global religious figure into one more participant in a familiar hometown rivalry.

Chicago on screen—and in stained glass
The Blues Brothers and a possible “The Bear” cameo
Reported posts invoked The Blues Brothers and joked about a “Chicago Pope” appearing in The Bear. Other coverage noted the phrase’s resemblance to the titles of Chicago-set television procedurals. These were posters’ pop-culture references, not official connections to those films or shows.
Michael Jordan in stained glass
The Associated Press report described imagined stained-glass scenes featuring Michael Jordan. It is a particularly good example of the memes escalating Chicago pride into surreal local iconography: even a sacred artistic form becomes a canvas for the city’s sports mythology.

Why the juxtaposition landed
The central joke was a mismatch of scale and tone: the distant, ceremonial image of the papacy set against ordinary Chicago life—standing in line at Portillo’s, cheering for the Sox, or arguing about pizza. Chad Nackers, editor-in-chief of The Onion, told the Associated Press, “It’s just kind of ripe for humor.” Chicago theologian Ashley Lenz, who works for the Catholic prayer app Hallow, described “a certain delight of seeing something sacred break into the ordinary.” She added: “The idea of a pope who’s stood in line at Portillo’s or cheered on the Sox makes it all feel closer to home.”
What this roundup can—and cannot—rank
These examples were documented in reporting on the initial May 2025 meme burst.
