Fincher described Fassbender’s ability to suppress his usual expressiveness as central to the casting, telling Tudum that the actor could create “a vacuum at the center of everything.” That vacancy can make the assassin fascinating to watch, but it also limits emotional access. The Associated Press review singles out the Florida fight as an example of controlled filmmaking: the violence feels physical and consequential rather than like a break from the film’s measured style. The larger revenge plot supplies forward motion, but the film is less interested in delivering a cathartic payoff than in staying close to the killer’s habits and limited perspective. Neither response needs to be treated as a universal verdict. If mood, visual precision and a tightly controlled lead performance matter most, the pared-back approach is likely to be a strength. If a thriller needs substantial character development or a strong emotional release, the same approach may feel like a limitation.
