The name is not new: Lucasfilm traces the Avenger to the 1994 LucasArts game TIE Fighter. But the series’ screen design has a separate influence, drawing partly on Kylo Ren’s TIE Whisper.
What is the new TIE fighter in Andor Season 2?
It is a prototype TIE Avenger. Cassian infiltrates an Imperial Sienar research and testing facility and steals the high-powered craft. Lucasfilm identifies the ship in its Season 2 coverage.
The theft is also a character beat, not just a vehicle reveal. Creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy said he wanted the opening to show what kind of work Cassian was doing and how his life had changed. As Gilroy put it: “I wanted to immediately show what kind of business he’s in now. I wanted to show how his life had changed and what he’s doing. He is different now, and is a leader,”
Does the TIE Avenger come from an older Star Wars game?
Yes. Lucasfilm says the TIE Avenger first appeared in LucasArts’ 1994 computer game TIE Fighter. That establishes the name’s history; it does not establish that Andor’s ship is a one-to-one recreation of the game-era craft.

The show’s design has its own documented lineage. Lucasfilm’s episode trivia says the screen Avenger was partly inspired by Kylo Ren’s TIE Whisper from The Rise of Skywalker. How did the production build Cassian’s TIE Avenger?
The production built a full interior-and-exterior TIE Avenger set. Lucasfilm’s set trivia notes that the structure could support its own weight at four points on the lower wings. Production designer Luke Hull described the practical aim in an American Art Directors Guild presentation: “It gave us the opportunity to design and build a fully functional interior and exterior Tie Avenger that we could dismantle and transport between stage and locations.”

That account establishes a practical, transportable ship set for cockpit and exterior work; it does not mean every shot in the escape sequence used a physical vehicle. Lucasfilm’s concept-to-screen feature also pairs Randolph Watson’s concept art for the hangar and escape with images from the finished series. It credits the creative leadership behind the work to Gilroy, ILM visual-effects supervisor Mohen Leo, and Hull.
