Bilbo Baggins — Martin Freeman
Bilbo is the hobbit at the heart of the expedition. He begins as an unlikely recruit and travels with the company toward the dwarves’ lost home.
Gandalf — Ian McKellen
The wizard urges Bilbo to join the journey and guides the company. He is an ally and organizer, not one of the 13 dwarves.

Familiar faces from the wider Middle-earth story
The first film also includes figures who connect its story to the wider world of Middle-earth. These are notable supporting appearances, distinct from Bilbo’s travelling company.
- Older Bilbo Baggins — Ian Holm: the older version of Bilbo.
- Frodo Baggins — Elijah Wood: Bilbo’s younger relative, familiar from The Lord of the Rings.
- Elrond — Hugo Weaving: the elf lord.
- Galadriel — Cate Blanchett: the elven leader.
- Saruman — Christopher Lee: the wizard.
- Gollum — Andy Serkis: the creature Bilbo encounters.
- Radagast — Sylvester McCoy: another wizard in the story.
These first-film supporting cast names are listed by Rotten Tomatoes. Their inclusion here is not a complete trilogy-wide appearance guide.

The films adapt Tolkien’s novel rather than reproduce a book cast list. Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, the 13 dwarves and Smaug belong to the central story; Tauriel is a film-created character. Some familiar figures from the larger Middle-earth setting also appear in the adaptation. Warner Bros. describes the first film as the opening entry in a trilogy based on the story. Warner Bros.
If you want the source story rather than a screen-cast reference, Tolkien’s The Hobbit is the book the films are based on. The novel is not a guide to the actors or the trilogy’s expanded screen cast.
