Ian Fleming borrowed the name James Bond from an American ornithologist whose bird guide sat on his bookshelf. When the real Bond’s wife asked about it, Fleming offered the family unlimited use of his own name—and joked that Bond could repay him by naming a particularly horrible bird “Ian Fleming.”
The real James Bond was an ornithologist
Before “James Bond” became the name of a fictional British spy, it belonged to an American scientist who studied Caribbean birds. Bond wrote Birds of the West Indies, a field guide whose first edition appeared in 1936. Ian Fleming, himself a birdwatcher, owned a copy of the book. Its author’s name gave him the name for his fictional agent. The American Ornithological Society recounts Bond’s career and the naming story at its account of 007; the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa also traces Fleming’s choice to the guide in its history of the name.

Bond’s own work was in ornithology, not espionage. He researched the birds of the Caribbean and published extensively. The unexpected connection is that his practical reference book became the source for one of fiction’s most recognizable names.
Why Fleming chose such an ordinary name
Fleming was not trying to give his spy a secret code or an exotic-sounding identity. In a letter to Mary Bond, the ornithologist’s wife, he explained that the name appealed to him because it was brief and unromantic, with a masculine quality. He wanted a name that suited an anonymous personality—the opposite of a grand, conspicuous hero’s name.

That plainness is the first part of the joke: Fleming chose an everyday-sounding name for a character who would become anything but anonymous.
Fleming’s exchange offer—and the horrible-bird punchline
Mary Bond had written to Fleming about his use of her husband’s name. In his reply, he offered her or James Bond unlimited use of the name “Ian Fleming” for any purpose they liked. Then he imagined the ornithologist discovering a particularly horrible bird and giving it Fleming’s name as an insult.

“It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born. In return, I can only offer you or James Bond unlimited use of the name Ian Fleming for any purposes you may think fit. Perhaps one day your husband will discover a particularly horrible species of bird which he would like to christen in an insulting fashion by calling it Ian Fleming.”
That wording is reproduced by the American Ornithological Society from Fleming’s letter to Mary Bond. Te Papa also recounts the exchange, though its wording of Fleming’s explanation differs; the passage above follows the Society’s version rather than combining the two accounts.

The humor comes from the mock bargain: Fleming had made the ornithologist’s name famous by attaching it to a spy, and offered his own name in return—preferably, he suggested, attached to an ugly bird.

The story did not end with the letter. The American Ornithological Society reports that Fleming later met James Bond and gave him a copy of You Only Live Twice, inscribed: “To the real James Bond, from the thief of his identity.”

It is a neat final twist on the original borrowing: the author acknowledged the real man behind the name, while the ornithologist’s bird guide remained the unlikely link between Caribbean science and the world of 007.
