Thrawn’s “secret invasion weapon” was not a superweapon: it was the Katana Fleet, a lost group of Imperial Dreadnaughts that gave him a sudden supply of capital ships during his campaign against the New Republic. In the Expanded Universe, now known as Legends, he secured most of the fleet before the New Republic won the Battle of the Katana Fleet.
What was the Katana Fleet?
The Katana Fleet was a group of 200 Imperial Dreadnaughts launched roughly 50 years before the Empire’s fall. When the fleet vanished, it became a legend. Its ships were valuable not because they had a special weapon, but because whoever found and crewed them could quickly add a formidable number of capital ships to their forces.
That sudden increase in firepower is what makes the fleet a “secret invasion weapon” in James Whitbrook’s January 26, 2024, account for Gizmodo. Thrawn’s campaign had already put pressure on a New Republic weakened by earlier fighting; the fleet gave him more ships with which to intensify it.
How did Thrawn find the Katana Fleet?
Smugglers rediscovered a handful of the ships five years after the Battle of Endor. By then, Thrawn had returned and was campaigning against the New Republic. He made locating the rest of the fleet a priority, using information from smuggler Talon Karrde to pursue it. The New Republic and other factions also understood that control of the ships could shift the balance of power.

Who won the Battle of the Katana Fleet?
At the Battle of the Katana Fleet in the Halm Sector, Rogue Squadron, New Republic forces, and Garm Bel Iblis’s resistance fleet drove Thrawn’s forces away. The New Republic won the skirmish, but the tactical victory came too late to deny Thrawn most of the fleet.
As Whitbrook’s account of the Legends story reports, one Dreadnaught was destroyed, 15 remained for the New Republic to recover, and Thrawn had already secured the other 178. The figures describe fictional events in the story, not real-world statistics.

How did Thrawn crew so many old ships?
The New Republic expected that putting crews aboard the old Dreadnaughts would take Thrawn months or years. That estimate failed when it became clear he had found Spaarti cloning cylinders among Palpatine’s reserves at Mount Tantiss on Wayland. Clone crews let him bring the ships into service far faster than his opponents anticipated, enabling assaults across New Republic space.
What happened to the Katana Fleet after Thrawn?
Thrawn’s campaign ended in New Republic victory after the Battle of Bilbringi. His betrayal of the Noghri had been exposed, and his Noghri bodyguard killed him. Gilad Pellaeon withdrew the remaining Imperial forces into the Unknown Regions.

The later fate of most Katana ships is not established in Whitbrook’s account. Their destruction in Imperial infighting or recovery by the New Republic are possibilities, not confirmed outcomes. In the Legends story, the New Republic could incorporate recovered ships; the precise disposition of the bulk of the fleet remains uncertain.
Is the Katana Fleet part of current Star Wars canon?
The Katana Fleet belongs to the Expanded Universe storyline, which Lucasfilm rebranded as Legends. Whitbrook’s January 2024 article said the fleet had not been canonized in current continuity at that time. That is a dated assessment, not a present-day official ruling: this account does not establish whether later canon material has changed its status. The Legends events described here should not be treated as current-canon history.

Where to read Thrawn’s Katana Fleet story
The fleet mystery and Thrawn’s campaign are told across Timothy Zahn’s original Thrawn trilogy: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command. Those novels provide the Legends context for the fleet’s discovery, the struggle to control its ships, and the campaign that followed.
