Where Sunrise on the Reaping fits
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a planned film about the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Lionsgate says it is set 24 years before The Hunger Games and announced a North American theatrical release beginning November 20, 2026. As of October 8, 2026, that date is still in the future. Once released, it would fit between The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and The Hunger Games in a full chronological order.
Lionsgate’s announcement also confirmed that the Sunrise on the Reaping novel was published in print, digital, and audio formats on March 18, 2025, in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The book is a companion option, not a film in the watch order. Lionsgate’s announcement.
Which order should you choose?
- Choose release order if you want to follow the franchise’s original film presentation.
- Choose chronology if you want to begin with the earliest story and then move forward through the released films.
- For a future six-film chronology, insert Sunrise on the Reaping between the two released prequels once it is available.
These are practical viewing options based on the films’ release sequence and stated settings, not a studio-mandated order.
