Dippin’ Dots and Mini Melts both sell ice cream in tiny beads, but they have separate origins. Dippin’ Dots dates its invention to 1988 and credits microbiologist Curt Jones. Mini Melts’ company histories place its experiments in the 1990s and name Tom Mosey; its European account also names Nick Angus as a founder. The shared cryogenic technique connects the products, not their company histories.
How bead-shaped ice cream began
Dippin’ Dots says Jones developed the beaded-ice-cream concept in 1988 by applying cryogenic technology to ice cream. The company’s timeline identifies Opryland U.S.A. in Nashville as the first amusement park to offer the product, in 1989. The brand says it then gained attention at malls and amusement parks in the early 1990s. Dippin’ Dots’ company history
Mini Melts describes a separate development. Its Canadian and European company histories place Tom Mosey’s successful experiments with cryogenic freezing in the 1990s. The European account identifies Nick Angus alongside Mosey as a founder. Those histories do not establish one precise founding or first-sale date, so a more exact launch year cannot be stated from the company accounts cited here. Both origin accounts connect the products to rapid, very-low-temperature freezing, but they do not show that one brand founded the other or that the two are the same business.

What cryogenic freezing does—and what it does not mean
Dippin’ Dots describes its products as ice cream, yogurt, sherbet, or flavored ice formed into small beads. Its FAQ says the mixture is flash-frozen with liquid nitrogen at the manufacturing facility. The company says the nitrogen has dissipated before the product leaves the plant, so the consumer product does not contain liquid nitrogen. Dippin’ Dots FAQ
Mini Melts Canada gives its own figures for its process: the company says it freezes the ice cream in liquid nitrogen at -197°C and stores it at -30°C. These are Mini Melts’ published claims, not a general specification for beaded ice cream or for Dippin’ Dots. Mini Melts Canada’s story

Not the same as astronaut ice cream
Dippin’ Dots distinguishes its product from freeze-dried astronaut ice cream. The beads are flash-frozen and can melt if they are not kept cold; freeze-dried astronaut ice cream does not melt in the same way. Dippin’ Dots FAQ

Dippin’ Dots says its product needs storage at -40°F to retain its bead shape. The company warns that many ordinary grocery-store and home freezers are not cold enough; select convenience stores use special Dippin’ Dots freezers. It says online delivery is available, but availability and shipping conditions can vary. Check the brand’s current listings and delivery terms for your location rather than assuming the product is sold or shipped everywhere. Dippin’ Dots FAQ

What the histories establish—and where they stop
The clearest comparison is between the company accounts, not an independent product test:
| Question | Dippin’ Dots | Mini Melts |
|---|---|---|
| Origin account | Company history dates the invention to 1988 and credits Curt Jones. | Company histories place experiments in the 1990s and name Tom Mosey; the European history also names Nick Angus as a founder. |
| Published freezing and storage claims | FAQ says the mixture is flash-frozen with liquid nitrogen at the plant; the brand says storage at -40°F is needed to retain bead shape. | Mini Melts Canada says it freezes at -197°C and stores at -30°C. |
| Dated distribution milestones | Company timeline names Opryland U.S.A. in 1989 and Japan as its first international licensee in 1995. | European history describes international expansion, particularly in Asia; dated country-by-country milestones are not stated in that account. |
| Ownership information in these histories | Company history says it joined J&J Snack Foods in 2022. | Current ownership detail is not stated in the reviewed company history pages. |
The comparison does not establish which brand tastes better, nor does it make the companies’ process claims an independently controlled comparison. Litigation references also require care: a USPTO-hosted record for a separate Mini Melts trademark proceeding includes party allegations and attached materials. A statement in that record about a Dippin’ Dots patent is a party’s contention, not by itself a reliable summary of the patent case’s final judgment. USPTO-hosted proceeding record
