There is no verified premiere date or first-look image for a new The Greatest American Hero television series. The May 2, 2026 date in recent return-related coverage was for a reported Free Comic Book Day comic special, not a TV reboot; that date has now passed.
What is the release date for the reboot?
No television release date has been confirmed in the available reporting. The date behind the headline is May 2, 2026, when Amp Comics’ The Greatest American Hero #1 was reported as scheduled to debut for Free Comic Book Day. The report says the announcement was attributed to Bleeding Cool, so treat the comic details as reported rather than as a verified TV announcement. CBR’s report identifies Don Handfield as writer, Alper Gelcel as artist, and David Mack as cover artist.

Is there a first look at a new TV series?
No verified first-look image or trailer for a new television series is established by the available sources. David Mack’s reported work on the comic’s cover is not evidence of a television first look. The comic and a possible TV project are separate things.

What happened to the earlier TV reboot idea?
ABC had previously developed a reimagining centered on Meera, an Indian-American woman. A 2017 report described a put-pilot commitment and associated Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan with the project. Deadline’s 2017 coverage documents that development stage; it does not establish that the project became a series.
In 2018, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said the network was developing a reboot starring an Indian American woman and credited the project to Nahnatchka Khan. Slashfilm’s report on Dungey’s comments is evidence of development at that time, not a premiere announcement or confirmation of the project’s present status.
