Its setting and creature imagery give it a natural big-screen appeal, but the film is available to stream on Apple TV and does not require a special television or sound system.
What is The Gorge about?
Directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Zach Dean, The Gorge stars Miles Teller as Levi and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa, operatives assigned to guard opposite sides of a vast, highly classified gorge. Sigourney Weaver plays Bartholomew. The guards are separated by the terrain and the rules of their assignment; inside the gorge is an undisclosed threat. Apple’s official film page describes the central setup, while its US title listing identifies the characters.
That divide gives the movie its strongest organizing idea: suspense begins with distance, watchfulness and limited information. The story then expands from the guarded perimeter toward the danger within, shifting the emphasis from contained tension to action and creature spectacle.
Does the creature-feature story work?
Suspense across the gorge
The opposing towers make the early premise easy to grasp and give the setting a practical role in the story. The separation is not just scenery; it shapes what Levi and Drasa can know about each other and the threat they are watching. That makes the film’s more restrained stretches an effective counterweight to the larger-scale action.
#1 Best Overall
Romance alongside the threat
The relationship between the two leads is part of the film’s engine, not a brief detour from the creature story. That mix can be appealing if you enjoy genre films that change gears, but it also creates a balancing act: romance, military-style action, science fiction and horror all compete for the film’s attention. In his Associated Press review, Jake Coyle noted the leads’ chemistry and production quality while criticizing the script and tonal swings. That is one critic’s assessment, rather than a measure of consensus.
Scale and storytelling
The gorge, its surrounding landscape and the movement from guarded observation into direct danger offer the film opportunities for striking visual scale. A larger display can make that geography and the creature imagery more immersive, while capable speakers may help convey the atmosphere of the setting. This is a viewing judgment, not a tested comparison of screens or audio systems; Apple’s listing confirms Dolby Atmos and Dolby 5.1 options, but playback depends on the device, setup and region.
Is The Gorge worth watching on a bigger screen?
If you enjoy creature features with a strong sense of place, the film’s scale is a good reason to choose the largest screen already available to you. Its premise moves between isolated guard posts and the space below, giving the setting more visual importance than a generic backdrop. The bigger-screen case is about immersion, not necessity: the story can be watched through the Apple TV app without buying Apple TV 4K or other dedicated hardware.
For viewers more interested in a tightly consistent tone than in a hybrid of romance, science fiction, action and horror, the tonal shifts may be a drawback regardless of screen size. A larger display can amplify the spectacle; it cannot resolve the film’s narrative trade-offs.

Where can you watch The Gorge?
Apple announced the film’s global premiere on Apple TV+ for February 14, 2025, in its premiere announcement. Apple’s US title page links to watch it on Apple TV. When that listing was accessed on October 8, 2026, it displayed a seven-day trial followed by $14.99 per month; this is a US offer shown at that time, not a guaranteed current price or an indication of availability elsewhere.
The Apple TV app is supported on a range of devices, including compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, consoles and the web, as well as Apple TV 4K. Check the app and film’s availability for your device and region before subscribing. Apple’s US listing gives the film a runtime of 2 hours 7 minutes and a PG-13 rating for intense violence and action, brief strong language, some suggestive material and thematic elements. It also lists English audio description, Dolby Atmos, Dolby 5.1 and AAC audio, plus closed captions and subtitles in multiple languages; options can vary by territory and playback configuration.
