What Beyoncé won at the 2025 Grammys
The Recording Academy’s official results name COWBOY CARTER as the 2025 Album of the Year winner. Why the Album of the Year win felt long-awaited
The scale of the moment was clear in the category’s history for Beyoncé: GRAMMY.com reported that she had received six Album of the Year nominations before winning for COWBOY CARTER. The result closed a long-running gap between her broader Grammy success and the Academy’s highest-profile album prize. At the 2025 ceremony, the Academy also reported that the album’s 11 nominations brought her career nomination total to 99; that is the count reported at the time, not a current total.

Album of the Year considers an album’s performance, production, engineering and mixing, songwriting, and additional aspects such as arranging and musicianship. The official result establishes who won, but it does not establish that the winning album was objectively superior to the other nominees; that remains a matter of critical judgment. The country-category milestone—and the separate Album of the Year record
The Academy described Beyoncé as the first Black woman to win Best Country Album, for COWBOY CARTER. That milestone belongs specifically to the country-album category. It is distinct from her Album of the Year win: the Associated Press reported that Beyoncé became the fourth Black woman to win Album of the Year, and the first since Lauryn Hill in 1999. Read the Academy’s coverage of the Best Country Album milestone; see the Associated Press account of the Album of the Year history.

The distinction matters: the two records describe different awards, not competing versions of the same claim. The Academy’s country-category story describes COWBOY CARTER as a 27-track album and covers Beyoncé’s remarks on genre and persistence.

After winning Album of the Year, Beyoncé dedicated the award to Linda Martell, whom GRAMMY.com describes as the first Black woman to play Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. She said, “I want to dedicate this to Mrs. Martell, and I hope we just keep pushing forward, opening doors.” The Associated Press also reported the dedication.

Earlier, accepting Best Country Album, Beyoncé reflected on genre: “I think sometimes ‘genre’ is a code word to keep us in our place as artists.” She also urged people “to do what they’re passionate about, and to stay persistent.” These remarks framed the country-category win as more than a trophy, while the Album of the Year dedication connected the evening to Martell’s place in country-music history. How the Grammys chose the winners
The 67th GRAMMY Awards took place in Los Angeles on February 2, 2025. The Recording Academy says its voting members are music creators, including artists, producers, songwriters and engineers. The Academy also noted that eligibility and category-name process changes took effect for the 2025 awards; the available official reporting does not establish that those changes caused Beyoncé’s win. The Academy’s results coverage explains the voting-member context and process updates.
