Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup, updated May 14, 2025, highlighted inventive death sequences, dark humor, callbacks to earlier films, and a fresh burst of energy. Its summary describes “Rube Goldberg-esque mayhem with inventive kills, splashes of dark humor, and callbacks to earlier entries.” Read the roundup.

Several quoted reactions make the enthusiasm clear. The Guardian’s Radheyan Simonpillai wrote that the series was “not only back but better than ever.” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman called it the “most visually impressive, emotionally compelling, and quick witted Final Destination to date.” Tim Robey of the Daily Telegraph singled out the “intricate sadism” of the set pieces, while The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck praised the opening sequence as a possible series best.
Is Bloodlines better than Final Destination 2?
There is no single critical ranking. Digital Spy’s Ian Sandwell said the film was not entirely flawless or the series’ best sequel, adding that Final Destination 2 would remain his personal favorite. Starburst’s Joel Harley described Bloodlines as more of a revitalization, while noting that the franchise had always been entertaining.

“Best” also depends on what a viewer values: striking direction and visuals, emotional engagement, elaborate death sequences, or a personal attachment to an earlier entry. The early reviews make a strong case for Bloodlines on the first three fronts, but they do not establish an objective series ranking.
What makes the kills stand out?
The first reactions repeatedly praise how intricate and inventive the death scenes are, often pairing gruesome escalation with dark humor. Co-director Adam Stein described the creative aim in a TIME interview published May 16, 2025: “One of the very first things we talked about when we started working on the movie was, what can we ruin for people?” TIME explained that approach as turning familiar everyday experiences into scenes that linger in the viewer’s mind. Stein also contrasted the series with slasher films built around a masked killer: “There’s no killer in a mask running around with a knife. But Death does have a personality. Death is very clever and plays a long game.” He said the elaborate kills can make viewers “root[] for Death in a way.”

The official movie site describes college student Stefanie as plagued by a violent recurring nightmare. She returns home seeking the person who may be able to break the cycle and save her family. Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky directed; Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor wrote the screenplay, from a story by Jon Watts, Busick, and Evans Taylor. When did it open, and where can viewers find it?
The official site listed international theatrical release beginning May 14, 2025, and a U.S. nationwide opening on May 16. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced digital availability for June 17, 2025, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD releases on July 22.
