As a viewing shorthand, yes: The Eternaut is a post-apocalyptic survival drama that may appeal to viewers drawn to The Last of Us. But “Netflix’s answer” is a critic’s comparison, not an official Netflix description or a claim that the two shows share a franchise. The Eternaut has its own Argentine history and source material: a 1957 science-fiction graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and artist Francisco Solano López.
What is The Eternaut about?
Netflix’s 2025 series adapts the Argentine graphic novel about survival after a deadly event. Netflix called it the first screen adaptation of the work in its announcement of the series, which premiered globally on April 30, 2025. The cast includes Ricardo Darín, Carla Peterson, César Troncoso, Andrea Pietra, Ariel Staltari, Marcelo Subiotto, Claudio Martínez Bel, Orianna Cárdenas and Mora Fisz. Netflix’s release announcement and its series page provide the official release and catalog details; catalog availability and audio or subtitle options can vary by region.

NPR’s review describes the adaptation as bringing the story from its 1950s origins into the cellphone era, while making collective action a driving theme. That combination gives the series a distinct identity beyond its broad post-apocalyptic premise. NPR’s review discusses those adaptation choices.
In what ways is it like The Last of Us?
The comparison works at the level of genre and viewing expectations: both are prestige survival dramas adapted from earlier works, set amid societal collapse. Ready Steady Cut used “Netflix’s Answer to ‘The Last Of Us’” in its April 30, 2025 review headline and characterized The Eternaut as a character-focused slow burn. That is one reviewer’s framing, not proof of objective equivalence or a formal side-by-side assessment. Read the review.

Where does the comparison stop?
The source and cultural context
The Eternaut began as a 1957 Argentine graphic novel by writer Héctor Germán Oesterheld and illustrator Francisco Solano López. Its national and historical context matters: the Associated Press connects the work’s reception in Argentina to the history of Oesterheld and his daughters, who were disappeared during the country’s military dictatorship. The story should not be reduced to a generic counterpart to another apocalypse drama. The Associated Press report explores that context.
The story’s emphasis
NPR highlights collective action as a central theme in the series. That is a useful distinction when deciding whether the comparison fits your expectations: the shared survival-drama label does not mean the shows approach their characters, communities or source material in the same way.

What should I read if I want to explore the source?
Look for the original El Eternauta graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López. It is the direct route to the story’s source, but editions differ by language, publisher and contents; check the specific edition before buying. Netflix’s announcement identifies the creators and the graphic novel behind the adaptation. Netflix’s announcement.

In a 2025 company announcement, Netflix reported that the production contributed more than 41 billion Argentine pesos to the economy and that the series recorded 10.8 million global views in its premiere week, debuting at number one on Netflix’s global Top 10 for non-English-language series.
