Start with William Gibson’s Neuromancer for a defining cyberpunk experience. Then choose Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? for an earlier dystopian vision of androids, Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash for satirical technological futurism, or Richard K. Morgan’s Altered Carbon for noir built around consciousness transferred between bodies. Together, these four novels make a useful first route through cyberpunk and its related fiction—not an exhaustive canon.

Where should you begin with cyberpunk?

Start with Neuromancer

William Gibson’s Neuromancer is the clearest starting point in this list. Penguin Random House calls it obligatory for a cyberpunk reading journey. Its setup brings together a hacker, a street samurai, corporate criminals, and a networked virtual space. Choose it if you want a direct introduction to the genre’s combination of technology, crime, and corporate power. Penguin Random House’s guide

Then follow your interests

For a dystopia centered on androids and questions of empathy, try Dick. For a faster, more satirical technological vision, choose Stephenson. For a later noir focused on identity and bodies, pick Morgan. The books approach related concerns from different angles, so the best next choice depends on what you want more of.

Four cyberpunk and related novels, compared

Book Genre role Tone and focus Why read it
Neuromancer — William Gibson Genre-defining starting point Hacker fiction; virtual space, corporate criminals, and street-level action Penguin Random House describes it as obligatory for a cyberpunk journey. Publisher guide
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? — Philip K. Dick Earlier related dystopian novel; not originally marketed as part of the later cyberpunk movement Androids, empathy, and a post-apocalyptic San Francisco A bounty hunter pursues androids; the novel is connected to Blade Runner. Publisher guide
Snow Crash — Neal Stephenson Cyberpunk novel High-energy, satirical technological futurism; virtual worlds, mafia, cults, and viruses Its protagonist, Hiro Protagonist, is a hacker and pizza delivery driver. A Del Rey edition has ISBN 9780593599730 and a publication date of November 22, 2022. Publisher description and edition details
Altered Carbon — Richard K. Morgan Later development Noir focused on identity, mortality, wealth, and consciousness transferred into new bodies A post-singularity setting makes transferable consciousness central to its premise. Publisher guide

What to read next, by the kind of story you want

  • Hacking and virtual space: Read Neuromancer first; try Snow Crash if you want a more satirical take.
  • Androids and empathy: Choose Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. It is best understood here as an earlier related work, rather than as a novel written within the later cyberpunk movement.
  • Identity and mortality: Pick Altered Carbon for its noir treatment of consciousness in transferable bodies.
  • A quick tour of contrasting approaches: Read Neuromancer, then Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Snow Crash, and Altered Carbon. This is a suggested path, not a ranking of literary quality.

Why include Dick’s novel on a cyberpunk reading list?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is connected to Blade Runner and shares concerns that make it relevant to readers exploring cyberpunk’s broader literary context. But it predates the later cyberpunk movement: calling it a related or influential dystopian work is more precise than presenting it as a book originally written and marketed as cyberpunk. Its publisher’s guide describes bounty hunter Rick Deckard pursuing androids in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco. Penguin Random House’s guide

Who coined “cyberpunk”?

William Gibson said in a 2020 TIME interview, “Cyberpunk is not my coinage.” In the same interview, he recalled considering “infospace” and “dataspace” before arriving at “cyberspace.” The distinction matters: Gibson is central to the genre, but he did not claim to have coined the term “cyberpunk.” TIME interview
