The “custody of Dominik” was a fictional WWE storyline: Eddie Guerrero claimed he was Dominik Mysterio’s biological father, and WWE made the dispute the prize of a ladder match against Dominik’s real-life father, Rey Mysterio. Rey won the match at SummerSlam on August 21, 2005, by retrieving a briefcase containing custody papers.
Why were Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero fighting over Dominik?
In the 2005 storyline, Eddie claimed that he—not Rey—was Dominik’s biological father. That paternity claim was part of WWE’s scripted plot, not a real-world claim about Dominik’s family. Dominik later recalled watching the storyline when he was eight; Netflix Tudum also summarizes the angle as a fictional paternity dispute that led to a custody match. WWE turned the dispute into a physical contest by placing custody papers in a briefcase above the ring. The event listing described the stipulation as a ladder match for custody of Rey’s son, whom WWE spelled “Dominick” on that page. WWE’s SummerSlam 2005 event page
What happened in the custody ladder match?
Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero met at SummerSlam on August 21, 2005. Both men climbed for the briefcase, which contained the papers representing custody within the storyline. WWE’s match recap says Dominick came to ringside and tried to stop Eddie, who frightened him into a corner.

The finish turned on Eddie’s wife, Vickie Guerrero: WWE’s recap says she pushed Eddie off the ladder, then shielded Rey as he climbed and retrieved the briefcase. Rey therefore won the match and, in WWE’s wording, “sole custody” within the story. WWE’s event results also record Rey as the winner. WWE’s match recap · WWE’s SummerSlam 2005 results
Who won custody of Dominik?
Rey Mysterio won. The result was decided by retrieving the briefcase, not by a real court or a real custody proceeding. WWE’s recap describes Rey and Dominick embracing after the match, with Rey’s wife Angie joining them in the ring.

How does the 2005 story relate to Rey and Dominik’s later feud?
The custody angle is separate from the later on-screen rivalry between Rey and his adult son. In its coverage of their WrestleMania match, WWE framed that later conflict around Dominik’s disrespect and Rey’s attempt to teach him respect—not the 2005 fictional paternity claim.
