The most vivid rivalry in hot dog history is playing out across the street in downtown Detroit: Lafayette Coney Island versus American Coney Island. Both serve the chili-topped Detroit Coney dog, and both have competing stories about their beginnings. The evidence does not establish a definitive winner—or a single inventor. The rivalry also reflects a larger divide: “Coney Island hot dog” means one thing in New York and another in Michigan.
What makes a Detroit Coney dog?
A Detroit Coney dog commonly starts with a beef frank in a soft or steamed bun, then gets topped with meat-only chili, diced white onion, and yellow mustard. The details can vary by restaurant; “Coney” describes a regional style, not one universally fixed recipe. Visit Detroit’s guide to the Detroit Coney dog and the Detroit Historical Society’s overview describe the local tradition.
Why “Coney Island” means different things
New York’s Coney Island is part of the broader frankfurter-in-a-bun story, commonly associated with Charles Feltman’s stand in 1871 and, later, Nathan’s Famous. Detroit’s Coney dog is a distinct Midwestern restaurant tradition built around chili and its classic toppings. The shared name does not prove that the Detroit dish originated on New York’s Coney Island; the Detroit Historical Society calls that idea a misconception, while the Smithsonian treats the connection as uncertain.
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council’s Hot Dog Facts, Figures and Folklore brochure says, “Many stories exist about the creation of the hot dog, and its true origin is often debated.” Its account credits Feltman with opening a Coney Island hot dog stand and reports 3,684 sausages sold in 1871. The Museum of the City of New York gives the less precise estimate “over 3,000.” Those accounts concern the early hot dog stand—not the invention of Detroit’s chili-topped Coney dog.

The Museum of the City of New York also connects the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition with hot dogs’ rising national popularity and baseball-park service. That is part of hot dog history, not evidence that Chicago invented the Detroit Coney.
Where did the Coney dog originate?
Michigan has early Coney restaurant claims, but no settled answer about who first served the Detroit-style dog. Visit Detroit and the Detroit Historical Society date Todoroff’s Original Coney Island in Jackson to 1914, before Detroit’s best-known Coney restaurants. The Detroit Historical Society dates American Coney Island to 1917. Those dates are part of a disputed history, not proof that one establishment invented the dish.

The Smithsonian’s account explains why the origin remains unsettled: claimed founding dates conflict with directory evidence, and early documentation does not support naming one inventor. It describes a Greek and Macedonian immigrant route for the dish as a legend rather than a proven chain of events. The Smithsonian reports that 343,000 Greek migrants came to the United States from 1900 to 1919; that migration context helps explain the community history, but the figure does not establish who created the recipe.
Which came first, Lafayette or American Coney Island?
There is no uncontested answer. The restaurants’ claimed dates and the alternative chronology discussed by the Smithsonian do not match:

| Account | Lafayette Coney Island | American Coney Island |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant dates reported by Visit Detroit and the Smithsonian | Lafayette claims 1914 | American claims 1917 |
| Chronology attributed by the Smithsonian to Katherine Yung and Joe Grimm’s Coney Detroit | The brothers jointly opened Lafayette in 1923 | Gust Keros opened American in 1936 after a falling-out |
The competing dates cannot be reconciled as though independent records had settled the matter. The Smithsonian’s reporting presents the alternative chronology as the authors’ account, not a universally accepted verdict. For the fuller history behind the conflict, see the Smithsonian’s account of Detroit’s Coney rivalry and the book it cites, Katherine Yung and Joe Grimm’s Coney Detroit: A History of Detroit’s One-and-Only Coney Island Hot Dog.
How Nathan’s Famous fits into the rivalry
Nathan Handwerker opened Nathan’s Famous on New York’s Coney Island in 1916. Its name links it to the New York hot dog story, but Nathan’s standard hot dog is not the same thing as a Detroit Coney dog topped with chili, onion, and mustard.

Nathan’s says the familiar tale of four immigrants holding a patriotic hot dog-eating contest at the stand’s opening is legend. The company identifies 1972 as its first major recorded July 4 contest; it also says informal contests began earlier. So the contest tradition should not be dated to 1916 as a documented event. In January 2026, the Associated Press reported that Smithfield Foods had agreed to acquire Nathan’s Famous for $450 million. That report describes an agreement; it does not, by itself, establish whether the deal has since closed.

Lafayette and American are neighboring Detroit institutions, and their competing histories make the question of precedence part of the appeal. But history does not produce a reliable taste-test result: no evidence here establishes that one restaurant’s Coney is objectively better. Choose according to your own preference, and treat the founding-date dispute as unresolved rather than as a contest with a proven winner. Current menus, hours, and operating details can change, so check directly with the restaurants before visiting.
