The cast of Companion sees a familiar contradiction in companion robots: humanoid machines can feel unsettling, while a cute, recognizable design can seem inviting. In a January 2025 io9 interview, Harvey Guillén, Lukas Gage, and Megan Suri joked about Tesla Bots and imagined a robot version of Perrito from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Their comments are reactions to a film and to the idea of robots—not evidence that today’s machines can do what the movie’s android can.
Why the cast finds robots exciting and frightening
In Sabina Graves’s January 31, 2025 io9/Gizmodo interview, Harvey Guillén summed up the mixed response: “It’s exciting but terrifying sometimes.” Lukas Gage answered, “The Tesla bots,” and Megan Suri added, “Those things are just terrifying.”

The exchange treats humanoid robots as an image that can provoke both curiosity and unease. Guillén and Suri said prototypes “exist right now,” while Suri made clear that existing examples are not as realistic as the android in Companion. The film’s fictional capabilities should not be confused with what a real prototype can do.
Why a cute robot can feel different
The conversation shifts from humanlike machines to a fanciful robot dog: the actors were open to the idea of Perrito, the friendly dog character from the Shrek universe, appearing as a robot in a theme-park setting. That contrast points to the role of design in how people imagine a machine—as threatening or approachable—but it is a playful hypothetical, not a comparison of actual products.

A realistic humanoid form can invite comparisons with people, while a familiar cartoon character comes with an established personality and a less imposing silhouette. In the cast’s discussion, the second idea feels cute and non-threatening. Neither reaction establishes how people generally feel about robots; the interview captures these performers’ responses.
What Companion is about—and what it is not
Companion is a 2025 thriller directed by Drew Hancock. Its setup is a remote-cabin getaway interrupted by the revelation that one guest is an android built for human companionship. Apple TV’s United States listing describes the android as subservient and gone haywire. The listing names Sophie Thatcher as Iris, Jack Quaid as Josh, Lukas Gage as Patrick, Megan Suri as Kat, Harvey Guillén as Eli, and Rupert Friend as Sergey.
Hancock cautioned against reading the story as a conventional tale of a robot gaining sentience. In a Daily Bruin interview, he said: “This is not a story about a robot gaining sentience. This is a story about a person discovering that they’re in a toxic relationship and that their journey becomes their escape, and them finding empowerment through discovery of self.”
That framing puts agency and relationship dynamics at the center, rather than presenting the film as a forecast of robotics. Quaid described its reversal this way: “What I love about this movie is that the most human characters are not human.” Thatcher spoke about wanting Iris to retain empathy and vulnerability as she discovers herself. These are cast and filmmaker interpretations of a fictional story, not claims about real AI systems.
Guillén’s concern: a robot is not a substitute for connection
In Samantha Allen’s January 29, 2025 interview with Them, Guillén said he values human connection and was unsure he could live with a robot companion. “I don’t think human connection can be replaced and I think people will get that confused,” he said.
He also reported that Gage was “pretty adamant about wanting one,” referring to a hypothetical robot companion. It is a light account of a castmate’s preference, not an endorsement of a real device. Together, the comments reveal different personal reactions to the same premise: curiosity about having a companion robot, alongside concern that its presence could be mistaken for human connection.
