The Case for Miracles: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for the Supernatural is Lee Strobel’s affirmative Christian apologetics case that miracles still happen. It asks whether reports of divine intervention today are credible—and confronts the harder question of why God does not intervene more often to relieve suffering. The book presents reported experiences and interviews as evidence to consider; its publisher’s description is not independent verification that any particular event had a supernatural cause.

What is The Case for Miracles about?

Published by Zondervan in 2018, the book investigates claims of present-day supernatural intervention. Strobel structures the argument around skeptical objections, interviews with scholars, polling, and accounts of reported healings and other phenomena. Its conclusion is a defense of the credibility of miracles, not a neutral survey that leaves the question open. Google Books’ bibliographic record lists the title as a 320-page book and classifies it under Christian living, apologetics, and religion and science; those categories describe cataloging, not an assessment of its argument.

The book’s central question, as framed by Zondervan, is whether it is credible to believe God intervenes supernaturally in people’s lives today. It also asks why such intervention does not occur more often when people suffer.

How does Strobel make the case?

Strobel’s approach is journalistic and accessible rather than a specialist academic treatment. He sets out objections, speaks with interviewees, and considers reports that supporters regard as evidence for miracles. The book’s publisher and Strobel’s official site describe polling and first-hand reports as part of that presentation. Those descriptions tell readers what the book contains; they do not establish the accuracy of every report or prove supernatural causation.

What counts as evidence in Strobel’s view?

In a 2020 Stand to Reason interview, Strobel said, “We need persuasive evidence just as you would for any other claim that you’re making.” He described a miracle report as an extraordinary event in a spiritual context supported by strong scientific evidence or documentation—such as medical records or eyewitnesses—and for which a naturalistic explanation does not make sense. That is Strobel’s stated standard, not a validated general test for identifying supernatural causes.

Documentation can help establish what happened and whether an ordinary explanation is plausible. The further conclusion that God caused an event remains an interpretation. Readers assessing a specific healing claim should distinguish the reported outcome, the quality and independence of the records, and the argument for why the event should be called a miracle.

What about the polling?

The publisher and author descriptions say the book includes scientific polling, but they do not provide a named polling organization, field dates, sample size, methods, or a specific result. Without those details, no percentage can responsibly be quoted from the descriptions alone. A reader wanting to assess a polling claim should consult the book and, if available, the original survey information.

How does the book address miracles that do not happen?

The problem of unanswered prayer and continuing suffering is part of the book’s stated subject, not a side issue. If God can intervene, the question is why intervention appears absent in many cases of pain and loss. Strobel acknowledges this tension in the framing of the book, but its overall position remains a defense of divine action rather than an argument that every prayer will be answered with a miracle.

That distinction matters when weighing the argument: reports of apparent intervention address whether miracles may occur, while suffering and non-occurrence raise a separate question about why intervention is selective or absent. A reader can find a case for the first claim persuasive yet still consider the second question unresolved.

Who is the book for?

  • Readers curious about contemporary miracle claims: It offers a popular, interview-led presentation of reported evidence and objections.
  • Christians seeking an apologetics argument: It makes an explicit case for continued divine intervention.
  • Readers seeking neutral or academic analysis: Its affirmative purpose should be kept in view; the publisher’s and author’s descriptions do not substitute for independent evaluation of medical records, survey methods, or original scientific studies.
