Its journey from a boy’s wartime grief into an uncanny realm can feel emotionally resonant and wonderfully strange—or deliberately diffuse. The film is most rewarding when approached not as a puzzle with one correct solution, but as a personal story of loss, change and inheritance unfolding inside a world that refuses to stay still.

Written and directed by Miyazaki, the film begins with Mahito, a boy whose mother dies in a Tokyo hospital fire during World War II. After his father remarries, Mahito moves with his family to the countryside. A gray heron draws him toward a mysterious tower, and his story opens into a fantastic realm of strange creatures and unstable rules.
The Japanese title, Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka, is commonly translated as “How Do You Live?” It is also the title of Genzaburō Yoshino’s 1937 novel. The movie is loosely connected to that book, not a straightforward screen adaptation. Studio Ghibli provides the film’s official title and synopsis, while GKIDS identifies it as an original hand-drawn story written and directed by Miyazaki: Studio Ghibli’s official film listing and GKIDS’ film page.

How do grief and fantasy work together?
Mahito’s loss gives the film an intimate emotional starting point. The fantastic world that follows enlarges the story without simply leaving that loss behind: its strangeness can be read as part of Mahito’s encounter with upheaval, family and the possibility of moving forward. That is an interpretation, not a single official explanation the film supplies.
The contrast is both the film’s strength and its risk. The private ache of a boy’s grief gives the adventure emotional weight, while the realm’s shifting creatures and logic resist the neat cause-and-effect of a conventional quest. At times, the distance between those modes makes the film feel expansive; at others, its fantasy may seem to wander away from the feelings that first drew the viewer in.
Is The Boy and the Heron hard to follow?
It can be, especially if you expect every image, rule and encounter to fit into a clearly explained plot. The film favors dreamlike transitions and suggestions over a tidy guide to its world. Viewers who enjoy ambiguity may find that openness absorbing; those looking for firm answers may find it frustrating.

A useful way to watch is to follow Mahito’s emotional experience rather than treat each strange event as a clue to decode. The title itself poses a question, but Miyazaki has not framed the film as a single-answer lesson. The Associated Press reported that, when asked whether the movie would answer its title’s question, Miyazaki said, “I am making this movie because I do not have the answer.” AP attributed the remark to Miyazaki in a 2021 interview with The New York Times: Associated Press coverage by Jake Coyle, September 8, 2023.
What makes the film feel like a Miyazaki work—and what feels different?
Flight, nature, wonder and peril will be familiar to viewers who know Miyazaki’s earlier films. Here, those pleasures sit alongside a more inward-looking concern with what a person inherits and what they must eventually let go. The film does not simply repeat a familiar adventure formula: its shifting fantasy reflects a story that is less interested in making every piece legible than in letting wonder and uncertainty coexist.
That late-career quality is part of the film’s resonance, but it should not be mistaken for a confirmed farewell. AP reported uncertainty about whether Miyazaki would make another film. At the first screening outside Japan, in Toronto, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro introduced the movie and said, “We are privileged enough to be living in a time where Mozart is composing symphonies,” referring to Miyazaki, as AP recounts.

How do the music and visuals shape the experience?
The hand-drawn imagery gives the fantasy its immediate pull: creatures and environments can feel vivid even when the story leaves their meaning unresolved. That distinction matters. The film’s visual invention is often more direct than its narrative clarity; a scene may be memorable for its atmosphere and motion without serving as an easily summarized plot point.
Joe Hisaishi composed the film’s music, and Kenshi Yonezu wrote and performed its theme song, “Spinning Globe,” according to GKIDS’ film information and Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement. The music belongs to the film’s broader emotional atmosphere rather than turning its mysteries into explicit explanations.

Yes, if you are open to animation that prizes sensation and emotional suggestion over a fully mapped fantasy plot. Its hand-drawn invention, uneasy wonder and attention to grief make it rewarding, particularly for viewers interested in how a familiar Miyazaki vocabulary can become more inward and reflective.

It may be a less satisfying choice if you want a fast, clearly explained adventure or a definitive answer to what every symbol means. The film’s elusiveness is part of its design, not a guarantee that every viewer will find it moving. Its most lasting effect comes from the tension between a boy’s intimate loss and a world too strange to reduce to one lesson.
