The strongest Halloween TV picks from 2000–2009 range from sharply satirical animation to kid-friendly costume-night chaos. This list favors episodes where Halloween meaningfully shapes the story, while balancing scare level, format, audience, and nostalgia. It is an editorial watchlist, not a definitive cross-network ranking: the official guides establish episode details, not a universal measure of which special is “best.”
Best for adult animation: The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror
The numbered Treehouse of Horror episodes are the decade’s essential Halloween anthology: each installment strings together several shorter horror parodies rather than telling one continuous story. The format makes them easy to sample, and their mix of macabre jokes and pop-culture send-ups suits viewers who want comedy first and genuine scares second.

There is no required starting point. Disney+’s guide puts it simply: “Start with whichever premise grabs you because the stories stand alone and there’s no strict watch order.” Watching in release order offers a different pleasure: seeing how the animation and humor shift over time. Disney+ reported 36 numbered installments as of September 2026; that franchise-wide count includes episodes beyond this article’s 2000–2009 scope.
For the decade’s selection, Hulu’s Halloween guide is a useful cross-check for episode titles and season references. Treat the numbered anthology as a distinct choice from Halloween of Horror, a separate Season 27 episode that Disney calls a holiday must-watch but explicitly does not count as part of the numbered series. Both are worth distinguishing when browsing, but only the decade’s installments belong on this list.

Best for younger viewers: family-friendly Halloween episodes
For a gentler watch, the decade’s children’s channels offer a different kind of Halloween pleasure: costumes, supernatural mishaps, and familiar characters in seasonal situations. These are better picks for family nostalgia than for viewers looking for sustained horror. The titles below are promising starting points, but the available official guides do not establish a fully verified, ranked cross-network shortlist, so they should not be treated as equally documented episode recommendations.
Disney Channel and Disney animation
- Kim Possible, “October 31st” (2002): A natural choice for viewers who want an action-comedy Halloween episode with a familiar Disney Channel heroine.
- House of Mouse, “Halloween with Hades” (2003): A character-crossover option for younger Disney animation fans.
- Hannah Montana, “Torn Between Two Hannahs” (2006): A live-action teen sitcom pick for viewers who prefer identity and costume comedy over spooky scares.
- The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Halloween episodes appeared between 2005 and 2007, making the series a useful route into mid-2000s Disney Channel nostalgia.
Nickelodeon animation
- The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, “Nightmare in Retroville” (2003): A sci-fi cartoon option for kids who like imaginative peril with their Halloween comedy.
These family-oriented candidates are identified in Classic TV Database’s directory, which is a discovery source rather than a primary episode record. Confirm the episode details in the relevant network or distributor’s official catalog before using that directory to locate a specific season or episode number.

How to choose the right kind of Halloween special
| What you want | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Several short stories and fast-moving parody | Treehouse of Horror | Anthology format; each installment contains multiple segments. |
| A continuous story rather than a set of segments | A family sitcom Halloween episode | Episodes such as those listed above center on a single episode-length plot. |
| Playful spooky comedy for a younger audience | Children’s animation or Disney Channel sitcoms | The focus is familiar characters and seasonal comedy, not sustained horror. |
| Sharper satire and horror references | The Simpsons | The anthology uses horror and popular culture as material for jokes. |
One useful distinction is whether Halloween drives the plot or merely supplies the decorations. For a dedicated seasonal watch, favor the episodes whose title or premise is explicitly Halloween-centered; a spooky image or an episode airing near October 31 is not enough to make it a Halloween special.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where to find the episodes
Disney+’s September 2026 guide says The Simpsons Seasons 1–36 are on Disney+. It says Season 37 is currently on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers, with a Disney+ arrival planned for fall 2026. Catalogs vary by country and can change, so check the service’s local listing for the particular episode rather than assuming the US-facing guide reflects every region.

Disney+ Press has also promoted a seasonal stream featuring 36 Treehouse of Horror episodes, while Hulu publishes a Halloween episode guide. Those promotions confirm that both services surface Halloween programming; they do not guarantee that every older episode is available everywhere or in the same app interface. For non-Simpsons titles, check the relevant service’s current catalog or the network’s episode page.
