The best-supported explanation is that Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington clashed over production timing and communication during filming on October 9, 2006. The argument became a much larger public controversy after T.R. Knight said Washington had used an anti-gay slur about him. Washington apologized for his actions and use of words, but disputed that he directed the slur at Knight. The public accounts do not settle every detail of what happened privately.

What sparked the argument?

Contemporaneous reports linked the disagreement to lateness and pressure to keep production moving. Washington told People, in comments quoted by CBS, that it was about “Time and (keeping) the production going” and that “The communication was lost in translation.” He said there had been no brawl or face punching.

Washington later gave a more detailed, retrospective account. In a July 2007 interview with Larry King, he said tension had built during location filming in Seattle, where the commute was long and Dempsey had sometimes been late. Washington described one morning when Dempsey was late and stopped for coffee, and said he felt he had not addressed the situation adequately as a castmate and leader. He also characterized the October clash as a disagreement over how Dempsey was treating him. These are Washington’s recollections, not independently established production records.

The sources support production timing and communication as the broad context, but not one definitive private motive. An early report also repeated anonymous speculation about jealousy over Dempsey’s popularity; that speculation is not a substantiated explanation.

How did the slur controversy become central?

The public story extended beyond the argument between the two actors. Washington issued a statement in October 2006 saying, “I sincerely regret my actions and the unfortunate use of words during the recent incident on (the) set.” The Associated Press reported that his apology referred to an alleged slur and that, according to the account then in circulation, Knight had not been present.

In January 2007, Washington denied at the Golden Globes that he had called Knight the slur, but used the slur while making that denial. Knight then told Ellen DeGeneres that he had been there, was not late, and heard Washington refer to him with the word. Knight said the incident prompted him to disclose publicly that he was gay. His account directly conflicted with the earlier report that he was absent.

Washington later denied directing the slur at Knight and described the controversy as a “horrible misunderstanding.” In July 2007, he told Larry King that the argument was not driven by animosity toward Knight or Dempsey. The accounts should be kept distinct: Knight described what he said he heard; Washington disputed that the slur was directed at Knight.

What did the actors say about the clash?

On The Oprah Winfrey Show in November 2006, Washington said, “I lost my cool but it wasn’t coming out of a place of animosity for Patrick or T.R.” He characterized the dispute as work-related, and CBS reported that he described it as lasting only seconds and not becoming physical. Dempsey and Washington both spoke of improved communication among the cast.

Washington’s October apology acknowledged his actions and use of words without establishing a complete account of the exchange. The public statements also differ over Knight’s presence and the meaning of the slur controversy. Dempsey did not give a detailed account in the later interviews covered here.

What is established—and what remains disputed?

  • Date: Contemporaneous reporting places the on-set argument on October 9, 2006.
  • Immediate context: Reports and participants connected it to production time, lateness, and communication, though they differed on the particulars.
  • Apology: Washington publicly regretted his actions and use of words.
  • Knight’s account: Knight said Washington referred to him with an anti-gay slur; Washington denied directing the slur at Knight.
  • Unresolved details: The exact words, physical details, who was present for every part of the exchange, and the private motive cannot be conclusively established from these public accounts.

In June 2007, Washington said he had been told he would not return to Grey’s Anatomy and that the network and studio did not share his vision for his future. That employment outcome is a separate matter; the available accounts do not establish that one moment alone explains every decision by the show or network.
