Survivor host Jeff Probst’s reported explanation was that the show’s classic gross-food challenges lost their appeal when producers moved from serving foods connected to filming locations to concocting food mixtures as smoothies. For a planned challenge in Survivor 45, some location-specific foods he wanted also could not be shipped from other countries. In May 2023, he described the challenges as dead “for now”—not permanently banned. The account explains Probst’s stated reasons, but does not establish a single cause for every season or identify the last season with the standalone challenge.
Why did Survivor stop doing gross-food challenges?
In a May 2023 discussion on the official On Fire podcast, Probst reportedly traced the format to foods people ate in the places where Survivor filmed. Producers would bring those local foods into challenges for contestants to try. Inside Survivor’s contemporaneous recap says the show later experimented with smoothies made from mixtures of foods, but Probst felt that version was no longer satisfying. Inside Survivor’s May 12, 2023 recap summarizes his explanation; the recap is not a complete transcript of the podcast.
Probst also reportedly explored a food challenge for Survivor 45 built around foods contestants had encountered at other filming locations, including balut and grubs. According to the recap, those foods could not be shipped from other countries. That practical obstacle was part of his account of why a planned return did not come together; he did not describe it as a permanent ban.
What “dead for now” does—and doesn’t—mean
The available account supports a time-qualified explanation: by May 2023, Probst said the classic challenge was dead “for now,” after the smoothie approach stopped satisfying him and the desired foods for a proposed Survivor 45 challenge could not be shipped internationally. It does not establish that the show made one permanent cancellation decision, that these factors explain every season without the challenge, or that the format can never return.

Did the eating challenge return?
Food appeared in a different format later, but that is not evidence that the classic standalone eating challenge returned unchanged. TV Insider reported on November 11, 2024, that the Survivor auction returned in Season 47 and included live grubs. An auction is a reward segment in which contestants bid on items; an eating challenge makes eating the challenge itself. The shared presence of grubs does not make the two formats interchangeable.

Food also remained part of the show’s broader discussion of gameplay. An official podcast listing dated April 3, 2025, describes a Survivor 48 episode discussing challenge design and hunger. That shows food scarcity remained relevant to the series’ conversation, not that the old gross-food challenge had returned.
