The 2005 dispute involving Matt Hardy, Lita and Edge became both a public personal conflict and a WWE storyline. Hardy and Edge each published their own account, while WWE later described how the rivalry played out on television and at SummerSlam. Those accounts overlap, but WWE’s scripted events are not proof of every detail of the private relationship.
How the relationship and dispute became public
WWE’s retrospective says Matt Hardy and Lita, whose real name is Amy Dumas, met in May 2000 and were a longtime couple outside the ring. In his own account, Hardy said he learned on February 22, 2005, that Dumas and Edge, whose real name is Adam Copeland, were involved. Hardy described the relationship as serious and said he had expected a future with her. That date and description are Hardy’s account, not an independently verified finding. WWE published Hardy’s account; its later retrospective supplies the couple’s history.
Hardy’s first-person statement began: “I had an incredible relationship with an amazing girl named Amy Dumas, and I was surrounded by friends who were good people and cared about me.” He later wrote: “On February 22, 2005, I learned that Amy and Edge (Adam Copeland) were involved in an intense affair behind my back.” These are Hardy’s words and framing; they should be read as his public account rather than as a neutral investigation of the private events.
What Hardy and Edge said about WWE’s response
Hardy’s account
Hardy said WWE released him. His statement presents his view of the relationship and his discovery, but it does not independently establish why WWE made its employment decision.

Edge’s response
In a response published September 16, 2005, Edge opened by saying WWE.com had finally asked for “my version of the events in the ‘sordid’ affair of Edge-Lita and Matt Hardy.” He said he regarded the matter as private, criticized Hardy’s public response, and disputed the framing of WWE’s handling. Edge said Hardy’s conduct was the reason for the firing, that he had not wanted Hardy fired, and that he had told Vince McMahon he would not oppose Hardy returning. Those are Edge’s claims, not independently established employment findings. Read Edge’s published response.
The two statements differ in emphasis and in how they assign responsibility. The available accounts do not independently settle every private detail or the exact cause and sequence of WWE’s employment decision. Hardy’s and Edge’s pages establish what each man said publicly; neither, by itself, verifies every claim.

How WWE turned the conflict into a storyline
WWE later presented Hardy and Edge’s conflict as a personal on-screen rivalry. Its retrospective describes Hardy’s return, a match against Edge at SummerSlam 2005, and crowd reactions directed at Edge and Lita. WWE says the feud concluded with a Loser Leaves Raw match, after which Hardy moved to SmackDown. These details describe WWE’s programming and retrospective account, not a ruling on the private dispute. WWE’s retrospective covers the rivalry and SummerSlam match.
WWE’s later account of Lita’s on-screen pairing with Edge includes a January 2006 Raw segment around Edge’s WWE Championship win that it calls a “sex celebration.” That was a scripted television segment and part of WWE’s storyline presentation; it should not be treated as evidence about what happened privately. WWE’s Lita retrospective describes the segment.

What the public record can—and cannot—establish
- Relationship history: WWE retrospectively described Hardy and Lita as a longtime couple who met in 2000.
- Hardy’s timeline: Hardy said he learned of Dumas and Edge’s involvement on February 22, 2005.
- Edge’s position: Edge offered a different account of the dispute’s handling and said he did not want Hardy fired.
- WWE’s contribution: WWE incorporated the public conflict into a Hardy–Edge rivalry and later recounted the SummerSlam match and subsequent storyline.
The most grounded answer to what happened is therefore a layered one: Hardy and Edge left competing public accounts; WWE converted the conflict into wrestling television; and the scripted storyline cannot resolve all questions about the private relationship or WWE’s employment decision.
