What does the Netflix docuseries cover?
Netflix lists The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping as a 2024 limited documentary series. Filmmaker Katherine Kubler and other former students revisit the Academy at Ivy Ridge, where they say they experienced abusive treatment. Netflix’s synopsis describes the school as claiming to use therapy and recreation to help teens. That is the platform’s description of the school’s claims, not an independent finding about what every student experienced.

Episode 1: Former students revisit Ivy Ridge
The opening episode centers on former students’ memories of the school and their return to the site. Their accounts are the documentary’s central testimony; they should be understood as testimony rather than as findings adjudicated in court.

Episode 2: Rules, punishments and family representatives
The second episode examines the school’s rules and punishments, along with the representatives who communicated with families. It focuses on how students describe the institution’s control over daily life.
Episode 3: Money and the wider industry
The final episode follows money and extends the discussion beyond Ivy Ridge to programs associated with the troubled teen industry. That broader scope is a reason to treat the series as an entry point, not as a comprehensive account of every facility or a measure of how common abuse is across the industry.

What is documented about the Academy at Ivy Ridge?
The Associated Press reported in April 2024 that Ivy Ridge opened in 2001 and closed in 2009 near Ogdensburg, New York. It was marketed as a boarding school for teenagers with behavioral issues and was one of several facilities affiliated with WWASPS.
AP also reported that New York’s attorney general had earlier found the school misrepresented academic credentials and issued unauthorized diplomas. A settlement provided partial tuition refunds to 113 graduates, totaling more than $1 million, according to AP. Those figures concern the graduates and settlement reported in that account; they do not establish the scale of harm at other facilities.

What happened after the series was released?
In April 2024, AP reported that the St. Lawrence County district attorney had received more than 50 complaints after the series began streaming, and none before its release. The office was assessing the complaints with state police and the county sheriff’s office. Complaints are allegations, and an assessment is not a finding of guilt.
AP noted that the passage of time limited prosecution for many offenses, while certain serious sex crimes were exceptions. That report described the local response at that time. The current disposition of the investigation is not established here, so the 2024 account should not be read as an update on its status in 2026.

What did the later court decisions decide?
In a 2025 federal district court order, the court recounted the background of a lawsuit brought by Narvin Lichfield against Kubler and Netflix. The order described the third episode’s discussion of WWASPS and the wider industry, and recorded Lichfield’s defamation and related claims. A court’s account of a complaint and a documentary’s content is not a judicial finding that every underlying abuse allegation is true.
In July 2026, the Tenth Circuit affirmed dismissal of Lichfield’s complaint. It described the dispute as involving defamation claims and the defendants’ free-speech rights to make a film about a matter of public importance. That decision resolved the appeal over the complaint; it was not a general verdict on the history of Ivy Ridge or the troubled teen industry.
