Off-White grew from Virgil Abloh’s experiments with clothing and graphic language into a fashion label with reach across art, design, music, and culture. Founded in 2013 after his earlier Pyrex Vision project, it became a defining platform in Abloh’s career. His 2018 appointment to lead Louis Vuitton menswear and LVMH’s 2021 majority-stake acquisition of Off-White LLC mark important institutional milestones—but the available sources do not establish the label’s revenue, valuation, or market share.
What came before Off-White?
Pyrex Vision as an early experiment
LVMH traces the brand’s beginnings to 2012, when Abloh’s work began as an artwork titled “PYREX VISION.” The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston describes Pyrex Vision as a clothing project that used screen-printed sweatshirts and plaid shirts. It was an early way for Abloh to explore how familiar garments could carry an authored visual language.
Abloh later described the project as “sort of an early phase of making art.” In the same museum-produced interview, he explained that he started Off-White as “this seasonal fashion sort of language concept, post this idea of streetwear, this idea of fashion looking for a change.” MCA Chicago’s interview with Abloh captures his own account of the transition.
How did Virgil Abloh start Off-White?
Abloh founded Off-White in 2013 and established a studio in Milan, according to the ICA’s account of his work. The shift from Pyrex Vision was not simply a change of label: Off-White developed as a seasonal fashion project with a broader creative ambition.

The brand’s official biography describes it as a multi-platform endeavor, encompassing seasonal collections as well as objects, furniture, and publications. That range helps explain why Off-White is best understood not only as a clothing line but as a platform for Abloh’s ideas about design and visual communication. What made Off-White’s visual language distinctive?
The ICA describes Off-White’s collections as drawing on everyday references—roads, signage, buildings, and uniforms—and using them to engage with subjects including class, race, history, and gender. Abloh treated things people already recognized as material for fashion and design, shifting their context and asking viewers to look at them differently.

This approach connected clothing to a wider conversation about images, objects, and culture. It also fits the way Abloh framed Off-White: as a seasonal “language concept,” not just a set of garments. How did Off-White expand beyond clothing?
Abloh’s work moved across fashion, music, art, furniture, and graphic design. The ICA’s Figures of Speech exhibition surveyed those fields together, showing the breadth of his practice rather than presenting fashion as an isolated chapter. What did Virgil Abloh do at Louis Vuitton?
In 2018, Abloh became artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear, according to the ICA. The appointment placed his work within one of the major institutions of luxury fashion and stands as a significant milestone in his career. It is part of the story of Off-White’s cultural reach, but it should not be mistaken for evidence of the label’s specific financial performance.

What did LVMH’s 2021 acquisition mean?
LVMH announced that it acquired a majority stake in Off-White LLC in July 2021. This was an ownership milestone for the company behind the label. LVMH’s announcement reports the majority stake but does not state Off-White’s valuation, revenue, or market share. The acquisition therefore demonstrates institutional investment, not a disclosed measure of sales or worth.

The clearest account of Off-White’s success is its cultural and institutional trajectory: an early clothing experiment became a 2013 fashion label with a cross-disciplinary identity; Abloh’s design language received exhibition treatment; he took a major menswear role at Louis Vuitton; and LVMH acquired a majority stake in Off-White LLC. Those milestones document influence and recognition, but none supplies an audited financial measure of the brand’s performance.
