Crunchyroll named Look Back its 2025 Film of the Year, but that award covered anime from 2024, so it does not establish the best movies released in 2025. Crunchyroll’s winners announcement is useful for understanding the award’s year, not for ranking the 2025 theatrical slate.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle
The official Demon Slayer franchise site announced a North American theatrical opening on September 12, 2025. The Associated Press reported an estimated $70 million North American opening weekend, citing Comscore, and described it at the time as the biggest domestic opening ever for an anime film. Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc
The official Chainsaw Man site announced a global theatrical release plan for 2025 and separately announced a September 19 opening in Japan. Those are not interchangeable dates: the Japanese premiere should not be presented as the film’s worldwide release date. The Associated Press described the film as a self-contained story based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga. The manga is relevant companion reading, but the evidence cited here does not identify the physical volume containing the adapted arc. Why this is not a seven-film ranking
A ranked list needs more than a set of release titles. - Story and character work: Does the film deliver a satisfying story and meaningful character development?
- Direction and animation: Do the staging, visual choices, and movement serve the film rather than merely advertise spectacle?
- Emotional impact and originality: Does it leave a lasting impression or bring a distinctive perspective?
- Accessibility: Can a newcomer follow and care about the story, or does it depend on substantial series knowledge?
- Context kept separate: Record release dates by territory, awards, and box-office performance as context—not as substitutes for those quality judgments.
Release geography matters: a Japanese premiere date, a North American opening, and a broader international rollout can fall on different dates. A fair annual list should state which release definition it uses and verify each film’s year accordingly.
