The announcement did not give a release date or name a cast, director, or distributor, so the films remain a planned project rather than a confirmed upcoming release.
What was announced about the new films?
On March 21, 2024, Variety reported that See-Saw Films and Michael Ende Productions had secured rights to adapt Ende’s novel and would develop and produce multiple live-action films. The rights were granted by the author’s executor, Wolf-Dieter von Gronau. Variety’s announcement report also quoted See-Saw producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman describing the book as a story that has captured generations of readers’ imaginations.

Fieldfisher, See-Saw’s legal adviser on the deal, confirmed the rights agreement on April 8, 2024, and named executive producers Lorenzo De Maio, Wolf-Dieter von Gronau, Simon Gillis, and Helen Gregory. Fieldfisher’s announcement corroborates the deal and the production partners; it does not establish a production schedule.
Is there a release date, cast, or director?
No release date, cast, director, distributor, or production start was specified in the announcement reports cited above. The confirmed information is a development plan for multiple films. Until the companies announce more, specific dates and names circulating elsewhere should not be treated as established details.

Is the series based on the 1984 movie?
The announced adaptation is based on Ende’s novel, not described as a continuation or remake of the 1984 film. That distinction matters: the older movie is the best-known screen version for many viewers, but the new project’s stated source is the book.
Ende’s official book page describes Bastian, a boy drawn into a book about Atreyu’s quest to save Fantastica, who discovers that he is more than a spectator in its events. The novel, originally published in German as Die unendliche Geschichte in 1979, is the source for the planned films. Michael Ende’s official book page also lists English-language editions.

How does the 1984 film fit into the story?
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the 1984 Germany–United States film starred Barret Oliver, Noah Hathaway, and Tami Stronach, with music by Klaus Doldinger. Michael Ende’s official film page lists its runtime as 97 minutes. The rights-holder’s film page provides the credits and runtime.
The relationship between book and film is not simply one of nostalgia. Ende’s official biography says he was shocked by the film when he saw it in 1984 and had his name removed from the project. His official biography records that response. It is useful context for a new adaptation, but it does not tell us how the announced filmmakers will approach the novel.

Will the new films be more faithful to the book?
That has not been established. Michael Ende Productions’ involvement and the stated book rights identify the source material, but the announcement gives no director, screenplay, or creative statement promising a particular degree of fidelity. The films’ interpretation of the story remains unknown.
