For a venture connected to his youth arts work, Forbes reported that Donda’s House received a $133,000 grant through the Louis Vuitton Foundation. Neither figure comes with a complete public accounting, so they do not establish a definitive ranking of West’s lifetime charitable spending.
What counts as a philanthropic venture?
West’s youth-focused work spans different organizations and kinds of support: grants made by the Kanye West Foundation, programs run by the separate Donda’s House, and giving reported in 2020. Donda Academy also belongs in the broader story of his education ventures, but the available reporting does not establish its total costs or demonstrate that it was a philanthropic organization. These efforts should not be combined into a single spending total.

The largest reported amounts
| Amount | What it refers to | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| $2 million | West’s reported 2020 donation to families affected by police violence | ABC News reported the giving but did not provide a complete disbursement ledger or itemized accounting. |
| $133,000 | Louis Vuitton Foundation donation to Donda’s House | Forbes reported the amount based on Donda’s House’s account; the underlying grant record was not located in the reporting reviewed. |
| $18,080 annually in 2007, 2008 and 2009; $0 in 2011 | Kanye West Foundation grants | Pitchfork reported these grant figures from tax filings. They describe grants, not the foundation’s total spending. |
| $70,000 total in 2016 and 2017 | AARP’s donations to Donda’s House | AARP confirmed the amount to Pitchfork. It was AARP’s support, not a donation by West. |
The figures cover different donors, recipients, years and forms of support. They cannot be added to produce a reliable total, and the reported $2 million is not an audited measure of completed payments.
Kanye West Foundation and Loop Dreams
The Kanye West Foundation was an earlier youth-focused effort. Pitchfork described Loop Dreams as a high-school retention program within the foundation and reported that its grant activity fell to nothing in 2011 after Donda West’s death. Donda’s House was a separate organization, not simply a renamed version of Loop Dreams or the foundation.

Donda’s House: youth arts and a community space
Forbes reported that West, Rhymefest and Donnie Smith founded Donda’s House in December 2011 to honor Donda West. The organization said West designed its logo, paid legal costs associated with its exemption status and helped secure the reported $133,000 Louis Vuitton Foundation donation. These accounts describe support attributed to West by the organization; the grant amount was not independently confirmed in the reporting.
Donda’s House held concerts, classes and events to encourage arts and music education for local youth. In November 2016, it bought West’s childhood home with the stated goal of turning it into a community arts space. In 2018, following a public disagreement about West’s involvement and the organization’s identity, it changed its name to Art of Culture.

Reported giving in 2020
ABC News reported that West donated $2 million to families affected by police violence. The outlet also reported that a representative said West would pay for Gianna Floyd’s college education. The coverage does not provide an itemized account of recipients, disbursement timing or the total actually paid, so the amount is best described as reported giving and the college education as a reported commitment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Donda Academy is not part of a cost ranking
The Los Angeles Times reported that West founded Donda Academy in fall 2020. It later reported that California’s attorney general sent the school delinquency notices in November 2023 and September 2024 concerning required filings and possible loss of tax-exempt status. Those notices are relevant to the school’s regulatory history, but they do not establish its total costs or show that it was a charitable venture. Without that information, comparing the school’s finances with grants and donations would be misleading.
