The Netflix series shares a broad mystery setup with Knives Out, but it is a six-episode, soapy and suspenseful limited series—not a connected title or a formally identified Knives Out spin-off.
What is The Perfect Couple about?
Amelia Sacks is about to marry into the wealthy Winbury family on Nantucket when a body is found during the wedding weekend. The celebration turns into a murder investigation, and the people gathered for the wedding become suspects. The setup puts family relationships and wedding-weekend tensions alongside the central question of who killed the victim.

Netflix classifies the series as a mystery, crime drama, and limited series, and describes its tone with the tags “soapy” and “suspenseful.” That points to a mix of whodunit plotting and domestic melodrama rather than a strictly procedural investigation. Netflix’s title page provides the official synopsis and episode listings.
Is it like Knives Out?
As a shorthand for an ensemble murder mystery, the comparison makes sense: both invite viewers to consider a group of people around a killing and ask who is responsible. It is a tonal and category comparison only. Netflix’s official descriptions do not identify a connection to Knives Out or say that the series is formally inspired by it.

- When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate, the inquisitive Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate.
The more useful distinction is format and emphasis. The Perfect Couple unfolds across six episodes and places the mystery inside a wedding weekend and a wealthy family’s relationships. Netflix’s “soapy” and “suspenseful” labels signal that family drama is part of the experience, not just evidence to sort through. If you want a feature-length ensemble mystery, Knives Out is a film; if you want the mystery and family tensions to develop over a limited series, The Perfect Couple offers that longer format.
Is The Perfect Couple based on a book?
Yes. It is adapted from Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name. The novel is the source material, but that does not mean the book and screen adaptation tell the story identically. Read Elin Hilderbrand’s source novel.

How many episodes are there, and who made the series?
The Perfect Couple is a six-episode Netflix limited series, rather than an ongoing multi-season show. Susanne Bier directed all six episodes and is an executive producer. Jenna Lamia is the showrunner and an executive producer; Hilderbrand is also an executive producer. Netflix’s Media Center listing gives the format and credits.
The principal ensemble includes Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Billy Howle, and Ishaan Khatter. Michael Beach plays police chief Dan Carter. In a Netflix Tudum cast guide published September 13, 2024, Beach said Carter would “basically be the Sherlock Holmes, if you will, of the cast trying to figure out who the murderer was along with the audience.” That describes the character’s investigative role; it is not an official tagline for the series.

What kind of mystery should you expect?
The appeal is the combination of a suspect-filled wedding gathering, family melodrama, and suspense over the murder. Viewers looking for a restrained police procedural may find the “soapy” label a better guide to its approach. TIME’s September 5, 2024 review called the show a glossy, superficial domestic thriller that still finds entertainment in familiar conventions. That is TIME’s critical assessment, not a universal verdict.
