In Matt Reeves’ screen continuity, Colin Farrell’s Penguin is named Oz Cobb—not Oswald Cobblepot. The change was a deliberate adaptation choice: producer Dylan Clark said the filmmakers wanted a more realistic-sounding name to ground the character in Reeves’ Gotham. DC’s comics profile, however, still lists him as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot.
Why did they change the Penguin’s name to Oz Cobb?
According to Gizmodo’s September 16, 2024 report of an SFX Magazine interview, producer Dylan Clark said the filmmakers wanted the Penguin’s name to sound more grounded. Clark compared the decision with changing the Riddler’s name from Edward Nigma to Edward Nashton, saying the latter helped ground that character.
Clark said Matt Reeves asked DC executive Jim Lee whether the screen version could be called Oz Cobb, and Lee approved. This is Clark’s account as reported by Gizmodo, rather than a separate DC announcement.
Why “Cobb” fit Reeves’ Gotham
Showrunner and creator Lauren LeFranc explained the choice through the setting. As quoted in Gizmodo’s report of the SFX interview, she said Cobblepot seemed less like a real person in the Gotham Reeves created, while Cobb sounded like a real surname for a gangster. The point was not to change the comics character’s identity across DC, but to make this screen version feel at home in its crime-focused world.

Is Oz Cobb short for Oswald Cobblepot?
No. The screen team intended Oz Cobb to be the character’s name in this continuity, not simply a nickname or shortened form of Oswald Cobblepot. The adaptation gives familiar characters its own interpretations, and this is one of those differences.
What is the Penguin’s name in the comics?
DC’s official character profile identifies the comics character as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot and lists his first appearance as Detective Comics #58 in 1941. DC’s official The Penguin series page, by contrast, describes the 2024 eight-episode show as starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb and continuing the crime saga begun with The Batman. Those references show the distinction: Oz Cobb belongs to Reeves’ screen continuity; Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot remains the name in DC’s comics profile.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a Penguin comic explain the screen name change?
No. The Penguin #1 is a related comics read, but it belongs to comics continuity and does not explain why the screen adaptation uses Oz Cobb. It can be useful if you want to read more about the character in comics, as long as you treat it as a separate continuity rather than a source for the film’s naming decision.
