Spoilers for “VIII” and “IX” follow. The first two episodes of The Old Man Season 2 give the series a sharper immediate purpose: Dan Chase and Harold Harper must work together in Afghanistan to rescue Emily, while Episode 2 makes her family history newly urgent. The change in energy comes less from a reinvention than from putting the show’s two adversaries side by side and tying the action to Emily’s identity.
What happens in the first two episodes?
Season 2 opened with “VIII” and “IX,” released on September 12, 2024. TV Guide lists the episodes at 48 and 51 minutes, respectively. The premiere sends Chase and Harper to Afghanistan to evade the Taliban and save Emily; the second episode reveals that Emily is Faraz Hamzad’s daughter and places her and her new family under threat.

Episode 1: “VIII”
The rescue gives the premiere a clear, urgent objective. FX’s official scene listing describes Chase guiding Harper through the Afghan desert “with a precision that feels almost impossible,” and labels the scene “Dan’s Wisdom Shocks Harold.” The image captures the episode’s useful tension: Harper must depend on the man he has spent years opposing.
Spoilers: In TVLine’s September 12, 2024 recap, the pair cross the Afghan border in a truck, survive an attack, and turn to Omar for help. Omar proves to be a Taliban spy. Chase is stabbed in the shoulder as they escape, and the episode closes on an apparent encounter with Hamzad and a gunshot, leaving the immediate outcome unresolved.

Episode 2: “IX”
Episode 2 shifts some of the suspense from the rescue route to Emily’s personal history. TV Guide’s synopsis identifies the central reveal: Emily learns she is Hamzad’s daughter. The threat to her and her new family gives that discovery consequences beyond a question of ancestry.
Why the premiere pair feels like a reset
Chase and Harper finally share the mission
The rescue forces two long-standing adversaries into a working partnership. The Walt Disney Company’s Season 2 announcement describes them setting aside their differences to recover Emily and notes that the season gives Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow more scenes together. That is not just a casting advantage: it changes the basic dramatic arrangement. Instead of pursuing separate interests, Chase and Harper have to read one another, disagree, and rely on each other under pressure.

Discussing the actors working together, co-creator, executive producer, and writer Jonathan E. Steinberg said, “And it turns out it’s pretty great.” The episodes give that enthusiasm a concrete basis: Chase’s desert expertise is useful, but Harper is not simply an audience surrogate or a passenger. The friction between them is part of the rescue story.
A defined goal gives the action direction
The Afghanistan mission supplies a more immediate through-line than a broad, slowly unfolding reckoning. Each obstacle in the premiere—an attack, a compromised contact, Chase’s injury, and the cliffhanger—pushes the same rescue forward. The danger is not incidental atmosphere; it tests whether the unlikely team can function together.

Emily’s identity makes the stakes personal
The second episode’s revelation connects Emily’s present danger to Hamzad and to the family she has formed. It widens the story beyond whether Chase and Harper can get through the immediate mission: Emily’s past changes what the rescue means and who may be threatened by it.
Does Season 2 start stronger?
That is a critical judgment, not an objective consensus. These episodes make a persuasive case for renewed momentum by bringing Chase and Harper into the same story, giving them a specific goal, and linking the suspense to Emily’s identity. The first episode’s cliffhanger sustains the immediate danger; the second adds a personal revelation rather than merely repeating the rescue setup. Viewers who value the series chiefly for its slow-burn atmosphere may experience the shift differently, but the opening pair has a clearer engine to drive its drama.
