John Marrs’s The One ends with five very different outcomes for people who trust—or are deceived by—the fictional DNA matchmaking service Match Your DNA. Christopher’s match is the police officer who kills him; Jade discovers her real match is Mark, not Kevin; and Ellie kills Matthew, though the available summaries do not establish the jury’s verdict. This guide covers the original novel’s ending. The 2026 expanded edition adds five chapters set ten years later, so its additional material is not included in the main account below.
What is The One about?
Match Your DNA claims that a mouth-swab test can identify a person’s genetically ideal romantic partner. The novel follows five people whose match notifications disrupt their relationships and expectations. The publisher’s premise asks, “How far would you go to find The One?”—but a match is not a guarantee of love or a happy ending. Harlequin’s book listing describes the service and its effect on existing relationships.
The premise belongs to the novel’s fiction; it should not be read as evidence that a DNA test can identify a destined or ideal partner. The story’s five interwoven plotlines put pressure on the idea that a genetic match determines what people should do.
How do the five storylines end?
Mandy and Richard
Mandy learns that Richard is her match, then is led to believe he has died. Richard’s mother draws Mandy into the family and proposes that she have a child using Richard’s stored sperm. Mandy later discovers that Richard is alive but unresponsive and that his family concealed the truth. After the baby is taken, Mandy alerts the police in time for them to intervene. The available plot summaries do not establish further medical or legal details.

Jade travels to Australia expecting to meet Kevin, her supposed match, and learns that he is terminally ill. She marries him before he dies. The late reveal is that Kevin’s brother Mark is Jade’s actual match; Mark had misrepresented the result to give Kevin hope. After Kevin’s death, Jade chooses a future with Mark.

Ellie’s plot does not have a confirmed courtroom verdict in the available summaries. SuperSummary’s account ends with her returning to court to hear the jury’s decision; it does not say whether she is found guilty or acquitted. SuperSummary’s study guide provides partial corroboration of the courtroom endpoint.
What does the ending mean?
The five resolutions resist a single verdict on genetic destiny. Some characters act on their matches; others are harmed by deception around a match; and several make choices that complicate what the test appears to promise. Jade’s actual match is obscured by Mark’s lie, while Christopher’s match with Amy offers no protection from his actions. Ellie’s relationship with Matthew is also entangled with manipulation of the system she founded. The ending’s central tension is between a supposed biological answer and the choices, lies, and consequences that shape each life.
