There is no official cross-sport ranking of the best team nicknames. This is an editorial selection of 27 names judged by memorability, specificity, historical fit, cultural staying power and documented origin—not simply by how many championships the team won. It includes both short-lived labels for particular teams and lasting nicknames associated with franchises or clubs; each entry identifies which kind it is.

That distinction matters: “The Big Red Machine” names a particular era of the Cincinnati Reds, while “The Bronx Bombers” has endured as a nickname for the Yankees. MLB’s 2020 ranking focused on era-specific baseball names rather than enduring labels such as those. The selections below bring together baseball, football, hockey and soccer examples, with origins grounded in MLB, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the NHL and the Premier League.

The 27 best sports team nicknames

  1. The Big Red Machine — 1970s Cincinnati Reds (era-specific)

Few nicknames make a team’s identity as immediate as this one. MLB traces it to 1969, when Pete Rose called a red car “The Little Red Machine”; teammates applied the phrase to the Reds. The 1970s team made the nickname feel earned, winning six division titles and two World Series championships. Its mechanical image conveys a powerful, coordinated team without needing a list of stars. MLB

  2. Murderers’ Row — especially the 1927 New York Yankees (lineup and era-specific)

The phrase first described the heart of the Yankees’ batting order before Babe Ruth arrived, but it became most closely associated with the 1927 team. That club won 110 games and finished with a plus-376 run differential, according to MLB. The nickname sounds intimidating, while its history is more precise than the familiar image of a whole roster: it began as a label for the lineup’s core. MLB

  3. The Bronx Bombers — New York Yankees (enduring franchise nickname)

This enduring nickname turns the Yankees’ home borough and power-hitting reputation into two words. Unlike “Murderers’ Row,” it is not confined to one lineup or season; MLB identifies it as one of the persistent labels that can stand in for a franchise’s formal name. Its staying power is part of its appeal. MLB

  4. The Amazin’ Mets and the Miracle Mets — 1969 New York Mets (era-specific)

These two labels captured the same extraordinary change in fortune from different angles. MLB connects them to the Mets’ rise from years of losing to their first World Series title in 1969. “Amazin’” conveys disbelief; “Miracle” casts the achievement as something beyond expectation. Together, they show how a nickname can become shorthand for a season’s story. MLB

  5. The Idiots — 2004 Boston Red Sox (era-specific)

In 2004, the Red Sox embraced a self-deprecating label rather than trying to sound fearsome. Leadoff hitter Johnny Damon explained the team’s attitude: “We’re just the idiots this year,” MLB quoted him. The name became memorable because the players helped own it, turning an apparent insult into an irreverent team identity. MLB

  6. Harvey’s Wallbangers — 1982 Milwaukee Brewers (era-specific)

This nickname is a neat blend of manager and power. It puns on the cocktail name “Harvey Wallbanger” and refers to manager Harvey Kuenn; MLB notes that the cocktail’s own origin is disputed. The Brewers’ 1982 team led the league with 216 home runs, giving the “Wallbangers” part a clear connection to their play. MLB

  7. The Family — 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates (era-specific)

The name drew on Sister Sledge’s hit “We Are Family,” Willie Stargell’s “Pops” nickname and the Pirates’ close-knit image. It has warmth unusual for a team label, and it connected an era’s personality to a song many fans already knew. MLB links the nickname to the Pirates’ World Series title that year. MLB

  8. The Gashouse Gang — especially the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals (era-specific)

“Gashouse” referred to coal-gas factories, and MLB says the phrase conveyed the Cardinals’ rough image and aggressive play. The nickname’s grit is unusually vivid: it suggests a team that is hard-edged and unpolished, not merely successful. Its association with the 1934 club gives the expression a specific place in baseball history. MLB

  9. The Go-Go Sox — 1959 Chicago White Sox (era-specific)

The 1959 White Sox were associated with speed, pitching and defense rather than overwhelming power. “Go-Go Sox” makes that style sound lively and distinctive, while adapting the club’s familiar name into a phrase that belongs to its particular team identity. MLB connects the label to that mix of speed and run prevention. MLB

  10. The Bomba Squad — 2019 Minnesota Twins (era-specific)

“Bomba” gave the Twins’ home-run barrage a celebratory, rhythmic name. MLB says the team set a single-season record with 307 home runs in 2019. Twins player Eddie Rosario put the communal feeling this way: “When you’re hitting a lot of bombas, everybody’s hitting bombas, [and] everybody’s happy.” The nickname sounds like a squad celebrating together, not just a collection of sluggers. 11. The Swingin’ A’s — 1972–74 Oakland Athletics (era-specific)

The name evokes the Oakland club’s colorful, unorthodox identity across its 1972–74 period. MLB also notes “The Big Green Machine” as another label for the team. “Swingin’ A’s” wins on personality: it suggests swagger and movement, giving the club a sense of character beyond the results. MLB

  12. The Evil Empire — 2000s New York Yankees (opponent’s label that stuck)

Boston team president Larry Lucchino used “The Evil Empire” in 2003 after the Yankees beat Boston for José Contreras. His line was: “The Evil Empire extends its tentacles even into Latin America.” The name was meant as a rebuke, but the Yankees’ opponents helped give it cultural life. It shows that a team nickname can be memorable even when it comes from a rival. MLB

  13. Bless You Boys — 1984 Detroit Tigers (era-specific)

Sportscaster Al Ackerman reportedly used the phrase sarcastically in 1983. After Detroit opened the 1984 season 35–5, it took on a more celebratory meaning. The transformation is what makes the nickname stand out: a line that began as mockery became a label attached to a historic start. MLB

  14. The Broad Street Bellies — 1993 Philadelphia Phillies (era-specific)

This was a playful twist on the Philadelphia Flyers’ “Broad Street Bullies,” fitted to the Phillies’ unkempt, throwback image. The name is affectionate and slightly unruly, a better match for that team’s look than a polished, generic label would have been. Its local reference gives it extra texture for Philadelphia fans. 15. The Black Sox — 1919 Chicago White Sox (historical label)

“Black Sox” combines the team’s formal name with the stain of the scandal associated with the 1919 club. Unlike a celebratory nickname, it preserves a painful chapter in baseball history. The bluntness is part of its force: the name remains inseparable from the story it represents. MLB

  16. The Windians — 2017 Cleveland team (era-specific and historical)

This pun was associated with Cleveland’s run of 22 consecutive wins in 2017, which MLB describes as an American League record. The name belongs to a particular historical context: the club’s branding has since changed, so it should not be treated as a current team name. Its wordplay is quick and tightly tied to the winning streak. MLB

  17. The Bronx Zoo — 1978 New York Yankees (era-specific)

MLB links “The Bronx Zoo” to the 1978 Yankees’ team feuds and rowdy fans, as well as to a memoir by pitcher Sparky Lyle. Unlike the power imagery of “The Bronx Bombers,” this nickname describes disorder and spectacle. It captures the sense that the team’s drama extended beyond the field. MLB

  18. The Blake Street Bombers — 1995 Colorado Rockies (era-specific)

Blake Street ties the name to Denver, while “Bombers” points to the club’s power hitters. MLB connects the nickname to the Rockies’ first postseason appearance in 1995 and several hitters exceeding 30 home runs. The combination of local place and team style makes it unusually specific. MLB

  19. The Whiz Kids — 1950 Philadelphia Phillies (era-specific)

The “Whiz Kids” were young Phillies who won the National League pennant in 1950. The nickname is compact and affectionate, suggesting both youthful talent and quickness. Its plainspoken charm has helped it endure as a name for that team rather than a generic claim about Philadelphia baseball. MLB

  20. The Boys of Summer — 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers (retrospective era label)

Roger Kahn’s 1972 book helped apply “The Boys of Summer” to the 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers. Because the phrase later became popular well beyond that particular team, it is less specific than many entries here—but the association is powerful. It sounds nostalgic without needing to spell out the era it evokes. MLB notes the book’s role in the nickname’s later use. MLB

  21. The Boys of Zimmer — 1989 Chicago Cubs (era-specific)

This pun adapted another franchise’s nickname to the Cubs managed by Don Zimmer. It has the warmth of a team in-joke, though its borrowed structure makes it less original than names born from a club’s own style or history. MLB attributes the phrase to Zimmer and notes its relationship to another franchise’s nickname. MLB

  22. The Hitless Wonders — 1906 Chicago White Sox (era-specific)

The 1906 White Sox hit .230, the American League’s lowest team batting average, yet won the league pennant. “Hitless Wonders” turns the apparent contradiction into the whole story: a team that did not hit much still found a way to win. The nickname is both teasing and admiring, which gives it more staying power than a simple label for an underdog. MLB

  23. The Bruins — Boston Bruins (enduring franchise name)

The Bruins name connects a sports team to an animal image: strength, toughness and a hint of menace. The NHL says owner Art Ross selected it from an Old English term for a brown bear, choosing an untamed, cunning animal. The documented origin gives the name more substance than a mascot chosen simply because it sounds fierce. NHL

  24. The Steelers — Pittsburgh Steelers (enduring franchise name)

Pittsburgh’s name carries the city’s industrial identity directly into football. The Pro Football Hall of Fame says the name was adopted to represent the steel industry. It is a strong example of a civic nickname: the team’s name belongs to the place as much as to the sport. Pro Football Hall of Fame

  25. The Bears — Chicago Bears (enduring franchise name)

The Pro Football Hall of Fame traces the name to George Halas’s purchase and move of the team to Chicago. Football players were generally bigger than baseball players, and the baseball team was the Cubs, so the football club became the Bears. The name is memorable partly because its relationship to the city’s baseball team is simple, local and easy to explain. Pro Football Hall of Fame

  26. The 49ers — San Francisco 49ers (enduring franchise name)

The name points to the 1849 gold rush, giving the team a clear connection to California history. The Pro Football Hall of Fame documents that origin. Few franchise names compress a regional story into a number so economically, and the name remains recognizable even to people who do not follow football. Pro Football Hall of Fame

  27. The Gunners — Arsenal (enduring club nickname)

Arsenal’s enduring “Gunners” nickname honors the Royal Arsenal munitions factory where the club’s founders worked, according to the Premier League. It is an occupational origin rather than a description of playing style, linking the club’s identity to its beginnings. The connection between name and history is unusually direct. Premier League

What makes a nickname great?

A strong nickname does more than sound catchy. MLB describes a great nickname as one that “celebrates, decorates and resonates.” The best examples here do that in different ways: “The Big Red Machine” evokes an era’s dominance; “The Gashouse Gang” supplies a personality; “The Steelers” ties a club to its city; and “The Idiots” shows players reclaiming a label on their own terms.

Origin and use matter too. Some names are affectionate, others are imposed by opponents, and some are tied to a club’s history or a particular season. A 2025 peer-reviewed study of Philippine national football nicknames describes acceptance or rejection of nicknames as a political act negotiated between the namer and the named. That is a focused case study, not a claim about every sports nickname, but it is a useful reminder that names can express identity as well as performance. Names: A Journal of Onomastics

Why this is an editorial ranking

MLB’s 2020 article ranked baseball nicknames, while the NHL, Pro Football Hall of Fame and Premier League sources document origins without proposing a cross-sport order. This list combines those different kinds of evidence; no governing body has established a definitive winner. Its order reflects the balance of distinctiveness, fit, origin, cultural life and staying power—not a statistical formula or a championship count.
