Is a new Last Starfighter movie happening?
A theatrical sequel was developed publicly by original-film writer Jonathan Betuel and screenwriter Gary Whitta. In an October 2020 interview, Betuel said, “It’s not a remake. It’s going to continue the story.” That statement described the movie concept at the time; it does not confirm current production. SYFY WIRE reported Betuel’s remarks on October 20, 2020.
Space reported on April 20, 2026 that there had been no further update on the theatrical project. The sources reviewed do not establish a current studio commitment, a production start or a film release date. The comic is a separate continuation with its own creative team and publication schedule. Space’s report covers the comic announcement and the movie project’s status at that time.
What is the story of the comic sequel?
According to the official publisher synopsis, the comic picks up from the film’s end credits. Alex Rogan is now the Star League’s leader—and its sole member—and must rebuild the galaxy’s defenses against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. The story also brings in new Starfighters alongside familiar characters. Simon & Schuster’s catalog listing describes the collected volume and its premise.

Who is making the comic?
Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes write the comic; Willi Roberts provides the art, and Francesco Segala the colors. Mad Cave Studios says it is producing the project in collaboration with filmmakers Jonathan Betuel and Paul Davidson. This is the comic’s team, distinct from the Betuel-and-Whitta theatrical project. Mad Cave’s announcement identifies the premise and creators.
When does The Last Starfighter comic come out?
Mad Cave’s product listings give two publication dates. The issue date is listed for July 1, 2026; the collected paperback is listed for February 2, 2027. These are publisher-listed dates, not confirmation that a particular shop has an edition in stock.

There are two different projects behind the phrase “The Last Starfighter sequel”: an authorized comic continuation with publisher-listed editions, and a separate theatrical sequel discussed in past development reporting.
