The line is Tanya McQuoid’s panicked outburst aboard a yacht in The White Lotus Season 2 finale: “Pleeease, these gays … they’re trying to murder me!” Jennifer Coolidge delivers it as Tanya realizes she is in real danger. The moment is darkly funny, but the threat is real—and the scene ends in tragedy.
What is the “these gays are trying to murder me” meme?
It is a quote meme built around Tanya’s exclamation in the Season 2 finale, “Arrivederci.” The elongated “Pleeease” and the blunt accusation capture the scene’s mix of panic, absurdity, and danger. A contemporaneous report by BGR documented social-media reactions to the line, including jokes about a specialty drink and a T-shirt. Those posts show audience humor, not official merchandise.

The title’s “a thousand” is figurative. The reporting documents that the line prompted memes and jokes, but it does not establish a total count or prove that this one quote alone caused the finale’s wider online attention.
What happens in the yacht scene?
Season 2 takes place in Sicily. During the finale, Tanya grows suspicious aboard Quentin’s yacht and discovers that she is in danger. She fights back and kills the men threatening her. While trying to escape from the yacht to a smaller boat, she slips, hits her head, and drowns.

That outcome gives the line its uneasy double edge: Tanya’s delivery is comic and larger-than-life, but she is not overreacting. The threat is genuine, and the sequence turns abruptly from a burst of chaotic bravado to a fatal accident. The Washington Post reported Mike White’s explanation that Tanya’s ending let her fight back and have a kind of victory before an absurd death. White summed up the character’s fate: “That’s so Tanya.”
Why did the line land as both funny and tragic?
The joke depends on the contrast between Tanya’s extravagant phrasing and the life-or-death situation. She sounds unmistakably like herself even as she recognizes the danger around her. The line gives viewers a comic release in the middle of a tense sequence, but the story does not make the danger imaginary or undo the tragedy that follows.
Rank #2
White described the characters as tragic in a Ringer interview: “They’re tragic people and that’s why, in this case, she has a tragic ending.” That framing helps explain why the scene can be quoted as comedy without making Tanya’s fate a happy ending.
Was Tanya’s quote the only Season 2 finale line discussed as meme material?
No. Portia has a separate, memorable exchange with Jack: “Yeah, so you f— your uncle?” In a December 12, 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Portia actor Haley Lu Richardson said she and White hoped that line would become a meme. She said White wanted it to play more as a dig, with the right balance of grounded, ridiculous, and funny. Richardson was talking about Portia’s line—not Tanya’s yacht exclamation.

BGR reported that the Season 2 finale drew 4.1 million U.S. viewers, based on network data released the following Monday, compared with slightly more than 1.5 million for the season premiere. These are period-specific figures reported in 2022, not current viewership totals or a measure of how many people shared the meme. The Los Angeles Times described the finale as 77 minutes long.
Quick Recap
What the meme can—and cannot—tell you
- It identifies a specific scene: Tanya’s line comes from “Arrivederci,” the Season 2 finale, and is delivered by Jennifer Coolidge.
- It reflects documented audience jokes: Contemporary coverage captured social-media reactions, but not a complete history of the posts or a verified meme count.
- It is not the finale’s only quotable moment: Richardson’s comments about Portia’s uncle line concern a different exchange.
