Prime Video cancelled Countdown after one season, so there is no second season confirmed. Jensen Ackles, who led the crime thriller as LAPD detective Mark Meachum, confirmed that the show was not picked up for another season. The decision was reported on October 10, 2025, after the 13-episode first season ended on September 3.
Was Countdown cancelled?
Yes. TVLine reported on October 10, 2025, that Prime Video cancelled Countdown after its first season. Ackles separately confirmed the news in a social-media video, saying, “As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season. Amazon’s gonna let it go, and it’s a bummer.” TV Insider also reported that he added, “That’s the way it goes in this industry.”

Ackles thanked creator Derek Haas and Amazon, and said the decision was ultimately outside his control. TV Insider’s report covers his response; TVLine reported the cancellation.
Why did Prime Video cancel it?
The reports confirming the cancellation do not give Prime Video’s reason. They do not establish that ratings, costs, audience retention, or production problems drove the decision, so none of those should be treated as the explanation.
#1 Best Overall
Countdown did appear in Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming-originals ranking in its second week of eligibility. TVLine reported Nielsen’s figure of 409 million minutes viewed across the first four available episodes for that chart week. That is a measure for those episodes and that week—not total season viewing—and the report does not connect it to Prime Video’s decision.

The first season’s 13 episodes follow Meachum, an LAPD detective working with an interagency task force. The team’s initial threat—a plan to bomb an outdoor Los Angeles shopping center—is resolved early in episode 10. The story then shifts to a plot involving the assassination of the California governor and/or the president.
The season ends without resolving the danger to Amber Oliveras, played by Jessica Camacho: the sniper the team has pursued kidnaps her. With no second season confirmed in the cancellation reports, that cliffhanger remains unresolved in the series as released. TV Insider’s coverage reports the cliffhanger, while TVLine’s account describes the season’s plot developments.
