The Anti-Monitor is one of DC’s clearest multiversal-scale powerhouses in the official sources reviewed, but DC does not publish a definitive ranking of every character across every continuity. The answer depends on what “strongest” means: the scale of a character’s impact, physical power and durability, breadth of abilities, and the circumstances of a particular story.
What “strongest” means in the DC Universe
DC’s characters are not measured on one shared scale. A cosmic entity capable of erasing universes may be the greatest threat by scale, while a hero or monster may be exceptionally strong in direct combat. Story versions and circumstances also matter, so a profile’s list of powers, a described feat, and an editorial description are different kinds of evidence.
- Scale of impact: Is the threat personal, planetary, universal, or multiversal?
- Type of power: Is the comparison about physical strength, speed and durability, control of energy or matter, dimensional abilities, or influence over minds and free will?
- Story context: Which version of the character is involved, and what is happening in that story?
On those terms, the Anti-Monitor has the strongest direct evidence here for multiversal-scale impact. That does not establish an uncontested number-one ranking in every DC story.
The Anti-Monitor: a multiversal-scale threat
DC describes the Anti-Monitor as a destroyer of universes. His character profile says he came from the Antimatter Universe, unleashed an antimatter wave that erased universes, and sought to destroy positive-matter universes. The profile lists invulnerability, immortality, energy and matter manipulation, reality alteration, and extreme cosmic power. These are strong grounds for calling him a multiversal-scale threat—not a universal ranking against every character DC has published. DC’s Anti-Monitor profile

His defining confrontation with DC’s heroes takes place in Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC identifies the event as the crisis in which heroes opposed him and lists his first appearance as Crisis on Infinite Earths #6 (1985). The comic is the most direct place to see why his threat is discussed on this scale. Read DC’s Anti-Monitor profile and first-appearance details.
The Monitor: a cosmic counterpart, not a settled runner-up
The Monitor and Anti-Monitor were born at the creation of the multiverse and fought across dimensions, according to DC. Their war lasted a million years before leaving them immobile for nine billion years; later, the Monitor gathered heroes to fight the Anti-Monitor in Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Monitor’s listed abilities include dimensional and matter manipulation, psionics, teleportation, and energy blasts. This establishes a cosmic counterpart with formidable powers, but DC’s profile does not declare which twin is stronger. DC’s Monitor profile

Darkseid: immense power and a different kind of threat
Darkseid’s ambition is to obtain the Anti-Life Equation and remove free will from sentient life. DC’s profile says he can be defeated but never truly destroyed, framing him as a persistent threat rather than offering a comparative ranking against the Anti-Monitor. DC’s Darkseid profile
A separate DC editorial article about the New Gods in Zack Snyder’s Justice League calls Darkseid “stronger than any hero” and describes him as an irresistible telepath who fires Omega Beams. That is DC editorial copy about a specific adaptation, not an all-continuity verdict or a direct comparison with the Anti-Monitor. DC’s article on the New Gods of Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Superman and Supergirl: extraordinary Kryptonian power
Superman’s official profile lists super strength, flight, invulnerability, super speed, heat vision, freeze breath, x-ray vision, superhuman hearing, and healing. DC describes him as god-like beside his human compatriots. That makes him one of the leading conventional heroes, but those abilities do not put him above universe-level threats by default. DC’s Superman profile
DC says Supergirl has Superman’s powers and suggests her lesser self-restraint may make her more dangerous in some circumstances. That is a contextual observation about how she might use her abilities, not proof that she always outranks Superman—or cosmic entities. DC’s Supergirl profile

Doomsday: destructive physical power and endurance
Doomsday offers a useful contrast to cosmic-scale characters. DC describes him as a weapon engineered for destruction and a recurring threat to Superman; Superman seemingly lost his life stopping him. Doomsday’s profile lists strength, invulnerability, speed, healing, agility, and toxikinesis. This supports calling him a formidable physical combatant, but it does not make his threat equivalent in scale to the Anti-Monitor’s universe-erasing wave. DC’s Doomsday profile
So, is Superman the strongest DC character?
Not by the broadest scale of impact supported by these sources. Superman has an exceptional set of powers and belongs among DC’s strongest conventional heroes, but the Anti-Monitor’s described destruction of universes is evidence of a much larger-scale threat. Darkseid, the Monitor, and other cosmic figures further show why a single cross-continuity ranking is hard to defend. “Strongest hero,” “strongest physical fighter,” and “largest-scale threat” are different questions.

Who is stronger, Darkseid or the Anti-Monitor?
The cited DC material does not settle that comparison. The Anti-Monitor’s profile gives explicit universe-erasing scale; Darkseid’s profile emphasizes the Anti-Life Equation and his enduring threat, while DC’s “stronger than any hero” description comes from an editorial article about Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Those claims address different evidence and contexts, so they do not produce a definitive all-continuity winner.
