Denzel Washington’s Man on Fire (2004), directed by Tony Scott, was a remake of Élie Chouraqui’s Man on Fire (1987). Washington said in a 2004 interview that he had not known the film was a remake. Both movies also draw on A. J. Quinnell’s 1980 novel, so the relationship is more than a simple one-film-to-the-next chain.
Which Denzel Washington movie was a remake?
It was Man on Fire, the 2004 revenge thriller in which Washington plays John Creasy. Netflix’s account of the franchise identifies the film as Tony Scott’s adaptation of Quinnell’s 1980 novel. In a 2004 interview with AlloCiné, Washington identified the earlier screen version as Chouraqui’s 1987 Man on Fire. Netflix Tudum’s overview of the films and series and the AlloCiné interview with Washington establish the two connections.

What did Washington say about the remake?
In the 2004 interview, Washington said he did not know Man on Fire was a remake of Chouraqui’s 1987 film. He also said he believed few people had seen the original. That second comment was his impression at the time, not a measured audience figure; the interview does not establish how widely the 1987 film was watched.
The interview’s wording is in French, so its meaning is best reported rather than presented as an exact English quote: Washington said he had not even known it was a remake and thought few people had seen the original.

How does the 1980 novel fit in?
Quinnell’s Man on Fire, published in 1980, is the shared source behind the two films. Netflix describes both the 2004 film and its 2026 series as loosely based on the novel. That means the 2004 movie is a remake of the 1987 movie while also belonging to a broader adaptation lineage from the book.
The available sources support that relationship, but not a detailed scene-by-scene comparison of the two films. It is safer to distinguish their documented adaptation links than to claim specific plot or ending differences without evidence.

What the 2026 series adds to the conversation
Netflix’s 2026 interview discusses a separate adaptation, not the production intentions behind Scott’s 2004 film. Showrunner Kyle Killen said the series aimed to offer “a new story, a new character, a new John Creasy” while making the material its own. His comment helps explain how a new version can share the novel’s foundation and recognizable elements without being a direct account of the earlier film’s creative process.
For release-era context, a 2004 CBS News profile also describes the film’s revenge premise and notes its novel origin: CBS News’ 2004 profile of Washington and Man on Fire.
