He said their concern made him confront the risk of losing the respect of people he loved. This account comes from Healy’s comments as reported by SPIN and Uproxx.
What happened during the bandmates’ intervention of sorts?
Healy recalled that his bandmates sat him down while The 1975 were working on A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. He described his addiction as a secret within the band—something his bandmates were not themselves involved in. The reports characterize the conversation as an intervention of sorts; they do not establish it as a formal clinical intervention.
According to SPIN’s account of the Zane Lowe interview, Healy said he reacted defensively. The next morning, he recognized how unreasonable and embarrassing his response had been. He later described that realization: “Oh my God, not only was that the wrong thing to say, that was so cringe.” SPIN and Uproxx also report that he told his bandmates, “No, you need to respect my drug addiction.”
Why did Healy say the moment mattered?
Healy said that in rehab he encountered people who had lost far more to addiction. He said he had not lost his career or possessions, but had nearly lost the respect of people he loved. SPIN reported his description of the risk: “I was just walking a very, very thin line.”

That framing keeps the story grounded in what Healy said about his own relationships and circumstances; it is not a general account of addiction or a clinical assessment of his health.
How did Healy connect his addiction to “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)”?
In a 2018 track-by-track interview with Pitchfork, Healy discussed “It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You)” as a song about heroin addiction. He said he had been reluctant to write about being an addict before getting clean: “I wouldn’t have written about heroin unless I had gotten clean.” Asked about “Danny,” the character in the song, Healy explained that he was consciously disguising his own story as someone else’s.

What timeline did Healy give for his addiction and rehab?
A 2022 Pitchfork profile reported Healy’s account that his addiction began in 2014 and that he checked into a rehab clinic in Barbados three years later. Those dates are attributed to his account in that profile. They do not establish his present-day sobriety or health status.
