There is no objective cross-fiction ranking of dragons. Different stories give them different kinds of power, and the evidence available here supports two clear, setting-specific claims—not a defensible top 15. Ancalagon the Black is called “the mightiest of the dragon-host” in Tolkien’s account; D&D designer Mike Mearls called Tiamat “the strongest of them all,” meaning among chromatic dragons. Neither statement establishes a winner across fiction.
How to compare dragons from different stories
A dragon’s size or destructive capacity is only one measure of power. A useful comparison also asks whether the story gives it divine or cosmic status, what supernatural abilities it has, how durable it is, what limits or vulnerabilities apply, and whether its threat comes from intelligence or influence as well as direct force. Those measures do not combine into a shared numerical scale.
Continuity matters, too. A character may have different abilities or feats in different books, games, films, or editions. A claim about one version should not silently borrow evidence from another. Finally, an in-universe title such as “strongest” is meaningful within its stated group and setting; it is not automatically a verdict about every dragon in fiction.
The strongest evidence-backed comparisons
Ancalagon the Black — Tolkien
Tolkien Gateway cites The Silmarillion, in “Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath,” for the account that Eärendil slew Ancalagon after battle in the air. Ancalagon fell on the towers of Thangorodrim, which were broken in his ruin. The same account calls him “the mightiest of the dragon-host.” That makes him an unusually well-supported candidate for the most powerful dragon within Tolkien’s legendarium.

The passage does not give a measurable size or establish how Ancalagon would compare with characters from unrelated stories. Claims about his precise dimensions or the size of his corpse go beyond what this account establishes.
Tiamat — Dungeons & Dragons
D&D Beyond’s February 2, 2018 article describes Tiamat as the goddess of evil dragons and quotes designer Mike Mearls: “She’s the strongest of them all.” In context, “them” means chromatic dragons in D&D—not all dragons in fiction. Tiamat is therefore a strong setting-specific contender, but the quote does not settle a cross-franchise ranking.

D&D lore and character details can depend on the edition and the source being used. Any comparison should identify that version rather than treating every account as interchangeable.
Prominent candidates that this evidence cannot rank
Deathwing and Malygos — Warcraft
Blizzard’s 2023 Dragon Aspects retrospective describes Neltharion’s corruption into Deathwing the Destroyer and recounts Malygos’s history. It establishes both as prominent Warcraft dragons, but it does not compare their power or place either above dragons from other fictional settings. A ranking would need to specify the Warcraft continuity and support its position with particular feats.

Aurelion Sol — League of Legends
A third-party lore page describes Aurelion Sol as a star-forger who created countless solar systems. That would be a cosmic-scale premise if confirmed in the relevant official continuity, but the claim is not verified here against Riot’s official Universe material. It should not be treated as established evidence for a ranking on that basis alone.
Other recurring contenders
Alduin from The Elder Scrolls, King Ghidorah from Godzilla, Drogon and other dragons from A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones, and Fatalis from Monster Hunter are also commonly raised in discussions of powerful dragons. The evidence available here does not establish specific feats or a fair relative order for them. Their versions and source material would need to be checked before making stronger claims.

Why a top 15 would overstate the evidence
A list of fifteen can be made as an editorial selection, but the number itself does not prove that the entries have been compared on equal terms. Here, the evidence supports a strong Tolkien claim, a strong but bounded D&D claim, and several candidates whose detailed cases are not established. Filling the remaining positions with confident rankings would blur the difference between a canonical statement, a demonstrated feat, and a familiar reputation.
For a careful answer to “Who are the most powerful dragons in fiction?”, the honest conclusion is narrower: Ancalagon and Tiamat have explicit, source-backed claims within their respective settings, while the wider field needs continuity-specific evidence before it can be ranked responsibly.
