Thalaimai Seyalagam has the ingredients of a sprawling political thriller, but critics found its execution less convincing than its ambition. In Scroll, Nandini Ramnath argues that loud scenes, mediocre dialogue and overblown writing and staging blunt the series’ intended look at political power. OTTplay’s Anusha Sundar likewise describes a convoluted story that does not develop its themes or characters deeply enough. The result, on those critics’ accounts, is a better fit for viewers drawn to a big political canvas than for anyone seeking tightly focused storytelling.
What is Thalaimai Seyalagam about?
The Tamil-language political crime thriller braids three strands: Chief Minister Arunachalam faces a corruption prosecution, a murder investigation unfolds in Jharkhand, and killings take place near Chennai. ZEE5’s synopsis says the investigations take an unexpected turn when they appear to be connected. The title translates as “Secretariat,” according to Scroll’s review.
The series was directed by Vasanthabalan and produced by Radhika Sarathkumar’s Radaan Mediaworks. Its principal cast includes Kishore, Sriya Reddy, Bharath, Ramya Nambessan, Aditya Menon and Kani Kusruti; ZEE5 also credits Ghibran with the music, Ravishankar with cinematography and Ravikumar M. with editing. ZEE5’s series page lists eight episodes and Tamil and Telugu audio.
Why did Scroll call it “overcooked and unsavoury”?
In her May 17, 2024 review, Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath sees the series as a political-conspiracy story joining a chief minister facing graft prosecution, Maoist violence and police investigations. Her main objection is that the style overwhelms the intended examination of power: she criticizes the loud scenes, mediocre dialogue, and writing and staging as overblown.

“Overblown writing and staging undermine the intent of providing a tour of the corridors of power, where the ghosts of dark deeds lurk.”
That is Ramnath’s assessment of the show’s execution, not a claim that its political subject matter lacks promise. She singles out Sriya Reddy and Santhana Bharathi as standouts, offering a specific reason the ensemble may still appeal even when the storytelling does not work for her. Do other reviews agree?
OTTplay reviewer Anusha Sundar’s May 17, 2024 review gives the series 2.5/5. Sundar calls the narrative convoluted and says it lacks depth despite its ambitious political canvas and talented cast; she also finds characterization underused and themes insufficiently explored. This is one critic’s rating, not an audience score or an aggregated consensus. Read Sundar’s OTTplay review.
The two reviews differ in phrasing, but both identify a gap between the scale of the premise and the depth or clarity of its treatment. Their shared concern is not simply that the plot is complicated: it is that the characters, themes and political setting do not receive enough development to make that complexity pay off.

Is Thalaimai Seyalagam worth watching?
Based on these reviews, it may suit viewers who enjoy ensemble political thrillers and are willing to trade narrative clarity for a broad, dramatic conspiracy. The case against it is stronger for viewers who want carefully developed characters, explored political themes or restrained staging. Ramnath’s praise for Sriya Reddy and Santhana Bharathi provides a reason to sample the cast, while Sundar’s criticism of shallow characterization cautions against expecting the ensemble to be fully served by the writing.
