Spoilers for the entire Season 4 finale. In “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” Eleven reaches Vecna through Max’s mind, while the Hawkins group attacks him in the Upside Down. Max’s heart stops, but Eleven revives her; she remains in a coma-like, unresponsive state. The plan does not stop Vecna from opening a vast breach through Hawkins, and the season ends with the town beginning to fall to the Upside Down.
Episode details
“Chapter Nine: The Piggyback” is Season 4, Episode 9 of Stranger Things. It premiered July 1, 2022, runs 150 minutes according to the 8FLiX episode guide, and was written and directed by Matt and Ross Duffer. 8FLiX episode guide
How the three storylines converge
The finale crosscuts between a physical assault in Hawkins, Eleven’s psychic fight with Vecna, and an effort to free Hopper in Russia. Each thread contributes to the same climax, but the characters cannot prevent Vecna’s plan from reaching Hawkins.
Hawkins: Max is the bait
The Hawkins group uses Max as bait to draw Vecna out. In the Upside Down, Nancy, Steve, and Robin attack Vecna while Dustin and Eddie try to keep the demobats occupied. Eddie’s guitar performance of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” becomes the operation’s most memorable distraction. TV Insider’s recap of the finale

What happens to Max—and does Vecna win?
Vecna catches Max while Lucas is trying to protect her. Max’s heart stops, but Eleven manages to revive her. Max survives, yet she is left unresponsive in a coma-like state; the finale does not show her waking or establish what her recovery will look like.
Reviving Max does not undo the damage. Vecna completes enough of his plan for a huge breach to tear open across Hawkins. The characters have stopped neither the invasion’s opening nor its immediate consequences: the town is now exposed to the Upside Down.

What the ending shows
After Hopper reunites with Eleven, Will senses that Vecna is still alive and present. The group looks out over Hawkins as smoke, red lightning, and the Upside Down’s decay spread through the landscape. The final image is not a victory celebration: the main characters are together, but the conflict is unresolved and their home is being overtaken.
Why the finale is called “The Piggyback”
The title refers directly to Eleven’s method of reaching Vecna through his psychic connection to Max. It also suits the episode’s intercut structure: separated groups act in parallel, each supporting the same attempt to stop him. That second sense is an interpretation of how the finale is assembled, rather than a separate plot mechanism.

Why Season 4 has a two-and-a-half-hour finale
The Duffer Brothers told Netflix that Season 4 was initially planned as eight episodes before they asked to add a ninth. Ross Duffer described the finale as “a long movie.” The extended runtime gives the episode room to follow the separate operations and bring them together at Hawkins. How Dungeons & Dragons fits the story
The group’s D&D knowledge gives them a shared language for interpreting the supernatural threats they face. Ross Duffer explained: “They know monsters from D&D, so they’re going to go, ‘Well, this reminds me of this from Dungeons & Dragons.’ That became a shorthand for referring to these monsters or other supernatural events that are happening to them.” Netflix Tudum interview with Ross and Matt Duffer
