WWE’s 2006 Impostor Kane angle tied Kane’s fictional trauma to May 19—the real release date of his film See No Evil—then introduced a masked double who beat him at Vengeance. The man playing the Impostor was Luke Gallows, according to later reporting. WWE ended the story quickly without giving the character a clear motive or an on-screen identity reveal.
Why May 19 haunted Kane
In the storyline, May 19 was the date Kane said his family perished in a fire. WWE’s May 22, 2006 Raw report said the date had triggered his distress, with voices and images of a mask continuing to unsettle him. That was the fictional explanation; in real life, May 19 was also the worldwide theatrical release date of See No Evil, the film starring Kane. WWE connected the date to the movie in its contemporaneous coverage and film announcement (Raw report, May 22; WWE film announcement).
Who was the masked Impostor?
WWE’s retrospective dates the masked figure’s reveal to Raw on May 29, 2006. He wore Kane’s former Badd Blood 1997 mask and ring attire, then attacked him (WWE retrospective). Retrospective reporting identifies the performer as Luke Gallows, then known as Andrew Hankinson. Gallows later recalled being assigned the role and rehearsing it in secret; that is his account of the production, not an on-screen explanation of the character (TheSportster’s retrospective).
What happened at Vengeance?
At WWE Vengeance on June 25, 2006, the Impostor defeated Kane. WWE’s match report says he mirrored Kane’s actions and finished him with a chokeslam; the official event archive records the result (Vengeance event archive; WWE match report). The report’s own bemused reaction captured how odd the bout felt: “The fans weren’t quite sure what they had just witnessed, and quite frankly, neither am I.”

How the storyline ended
WWE’s retrospective says Kane eventually forced the Impostor out and took back his mask. A September 2006 WWE archive report likewise described Kane as having rid himself of the double (WWE retrospective; Raw report, September 25, 2006). The resolution was abrupt: the story did not establish why the Impostor had targeted Kane or offer a meaningful identity reveal within the fiction.
Why did WWE end the angle so quickly?
Kane later said Vince McMahon objected to the costume wig, recalling McMahon’s line: “The wig looks as fake as all get out.” That recollection, reported by WrestleTalk, offers a possible production-side explanation for the presentation, but it does not establish that the wig was the sole reason the angle ended or document WWE’s full creative decision (WrestleTalk’s retrospective).

Claims that the Impostor was meant to replace Kane or be revealed as the “real” Kane remain unconfirmed by the cited WWE accounts and retrospective reporting. The clearest answer is that WWE aired a short-lived masked-double story, resolved it by having Kane drive the figure away, and left the character’s motive unexplained.
