Giorgio Armani built a globally recognizable fashion house by pairing a distinctive design idea—softer, less formal tailoring—with unusually close control over the company. Founded in Milan in 1975, the Armani Group reported €2.3 billion in revenue in 2024. That figure is company revenue, not Armani’s personal wealth or the value of the business.

How Armani began in Milan

Before starting his own company, Giorgio Armani worked with Italian fashion houses. He founded his Milan brand in 1975 with a clear response to conventional tailoring: clothes could look polished without feeling rigid. The house’s history describes lighter jackets, fluid silhouettes and understated colors as hallmarks of its early design language.

That proposition made comfort part of the look rather than a compromise. Armani’s jackets softened the structure of traditional suiting, retaining a tailored appearance while allowing more movement. The company dates its international rise to the 1980s.

The jacket that made the style visible

A pivotal moment came with the soft-shouldered, deconstructed jacket. The Associated Press connects its breakthrough to Richard Gere wearing Armani in the 1980 film American Gigolo. The look gained cultural visibility beyond the film, and women also adopted the jacket.

Screen exposure helped introduce the clothes to a wider audience, but celebrity placement alone does not explain the house’s growth. The product had a legible identity, and Armani kept creative direction closely tied to the company as its reach expanded.

From a tailoring signature to a broader brand

The jacket gave Armani a recognizable foundation: refined clothing with less formal structure and restrained styling. The company’s official history also places fragrances among its product categories, including Acqua di Giò and Armani Code. These extensions broadened the brand beyond apparel while retaining its name and visual identity.

The available sources establish the existence of those fragrance lines, but do not provide a reliable breakdown of revenue by product category. They do not establish a workforce, store count or geographic-reach figure suitable for describing the Group’s scale.

How large the Armani Group is—and what revenue means

Reuters reported that the Armani Group generated €2.3 billion in revenue in 2024. This is the reported annual revenue of the Group; it is not Giorgio Armani’s personal net worth, a valuation of the company, or a separately established measure of licensing-inclusive turnover. Reuters also described profits as shrinking amid a broader luxury-market slowdown, without establishing a profit figure in the reporting cited here.

Revenue and profit answer different questions. Revenue measures sales earned over a period; profit reflects what remains after costs. The 2024 revenue figure shows the scale of the business, while the reported pressure on profits cautions against treating sales alone as a measure of financial health.

Why founder control was central

Armani was not only the house’s designer. Reuters reported that he remained the company’s sole major shareholder and maintained both creative and managerial control until his death. That alignment gave the founder an unusually direct role in the company’s ownership, design decisions and management.

Close control helped preserve continuity between the clothes and the business bearing his name. It also made succession a consequential question: a company shaped by one founder’s creative and managerial authority must decide how to carry that identity forward when that authority ends.

What the will says about succession

The Associated Press reported that Armani’s will distributes interests among longtime collaborator Pantaleo “Leo” Dell’Orco, family members and the Giorgio Armani Foundation. It also sets out a staged path for a possible change in ownership:

  • An initial 15% stake sale is directed to take place no earlier than one year and within 18 months after Armani’s death.
  • A further sale of 30% to 55%, or a listing, is contemplated within three to five years.

These are reported instructions in the will, not confirmation that a sale or listing has taken place. The company’s executive committee, as quoted by AP, said the stated intention was to safeguard “strategic continuity, corporate cohesion and financial stability for long-term development.” The plan makes continuity a stated priority while leaving open how the contemplated ownership changes will ultimately be carried out.

Armani’s place in ready-to-wear

Mario Boselli, who led Italy’s fashion chamber from 1999 to 2015, told AP: “I have to say, King George is the first in everything. The first but not the only,” and called Armani “the master of luxury ready-to-wear.” The tribute points to more than a recognizable jacket: Armani helped make relaxed tailoring a lasting language for luxury clothing.

The business story rests on the connection between that design proposition and founder control. Armani’s clothes offered a clear alternative to rigid suiting; his leadership kept the creative vision and company management closely linked as the house grew. Its next chapter will test how that continuity works under the succession arrangements reported in his will.
