“The Late Emperor,” Season 2, Episode 9 and episode 33 overall, turns Maomao’s investigation of a supposed curse into a clue about the former emperor. Spoilers ahead: the episode preview identifies an oddly colored stone among Jinshi’s childhood toys as the object connected to the curse. The episode’s English platform title is “The Late Emperor”; ORICON’s Japanese preview renders it “Former Emperor.”
What happens in The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 9?
At the Empress Dowager An’s request, Maomao investigates a curse associated with the former emperor. She stays at Jinshi’s residence, where Suiren tells her stories about Jinshi’s childhood. Among his old toys, Maomao notices an oddly colored stone. The preview identifies the stone as the curse placed upon the former emperor.
That is the central clue established by the episode descriptions. Apple TV’s synopsis says Maomao’s investigation “reveals more about the late emperor than anticipated,” but the available listings do not explain the stone’s mechanism, the emperor’s motives, or what follows from the discovery. The recap therefore stops short of treating those details as settled.
What is the curse in “The Late Emperor”?
The confirmed connection is the oddly colored stone found among Jinshi’s childhood toys: the preview describes it as the curse placed upon the former emperor. The listings do not specify how the curse worked or explain its origin, so those points should not be inferred from the clue alone.

Who is the late emperor?
The episode concerns the former emperor, whose history comes into view through Maomao’s investigation. The platform synopsis signals that she learns more about him than expected, but the cited episode descriptions do not provide further biographical details. The title itself varies by source: English listings use “The Late Emperor,” while ORICON’s preview calls it “Former Emperor.”
Review: a private keepsake opens onto palace history
A mystery that broadens its stakes
The episode’s premise links a request from the Empress Dowager to a discovery in Jinshi’s childhood possessions. That structure gives the curse investigation a route into the palace’s past: the question is no longer only what the object is, but what its presence says about the former emperor. The official-preview framing makes that expansion the episode’s central dramatic promise.

The stone’s unsettling contrast
A stone mixed in with childhood toys is an unassuming kind of object to carry such a disturbing explanation. That contrast gives the clue its narrative weight: the ordinary setting of Jinshi’s keepsakes meets the troubling history Maomao is investigating. The available synopses establish the setup, not enough scene detail to judge how the episode develops it moment by moment.
A clue that connects generations
Maomao’s role as investigator ties together three points of view: the Empress Dowager initiates the inquiry, Suiren supplies context about Jinshi’s childhood, and the object leads back to the former emperor. The result is a mystery whose characters and history are closely linked, rather than a case presented in isolation.
