Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 22, “Royal Guard.” Jinshi’s royal guard arrives to seal the Shi clan’s fate, while Maomao is determined to save her friend Shisui. That opposing pull—state action on one side, personal loyalty on the other—is the episode’s central dramatic setup.
Episode details
- Series: The Apothecary Diaries
- Episode: Season 2, Episode 22, “Royal Guard”
- Placement: It follows Episode 21, “Taibon,” and precedes Episode 23, “The Shi Clan.”
Prime Video lists the season as 24 episodes and places “Royal Guard” at Episode 22. Prime Video’s episode listing describes the royal guard, led by Jinshi, arriving as Maomao seeks to save Shisui.
What happens in “Royal Guard”
The episode’s listed premise puts Jinshi and the royal guard at the center of an imminent confrontation with the Shi clan. Their arrival signals that the clan’s position is reaching a decisive point. At the same time, Maomao’s goal is personal: she wants to save Shisui, her friend.
That is the supported spoiler-level recap. Available episode listings establish this setup, but not a complete sequence of scenes, the precise outcome of Maomao’s effort, or the episode’s final beat. A beat-by-beat account or a definitive explanation of the ending would go beyond what those sources establish.

Review: political pressure meets personal loyalty
The premise gives the episode two stakes that are related but not identical. Jinshi’s guard represents organized authority moving against the Shi clan; Maomao’s concern for Shisui gives the looming conflict a personal cost. The tension comes from the possibility that a large political decision could put someone Maomao cares about in danger.
That contrast is a useful lens for judging the episode: does the scale of the guard’s arrival make the danger feel urgent, while Maomao’s determination keeps the conflict emotionally specific? The listings confirm those elements of the setup, but do not establish how effectively the episode stages or resolves them. Without scene-level evidence, a firm verdict on pacing, animation, dialogue, or performance would be speculative.

How Episode 22 leads into “The Shi Clan”
Episode 22 is a lead-in to a continuing confrontation, not a substitute for the next installment. Prime Video lists Episode 23 as “The Shi Clan” and says Jinshi and his forces infiltrate the stronghold and corner remaining members of the clan. Those events belong to Episode 23; they should not be folded into a recap of “Royal Guard.”

Catalog dates and runtimes are not uniform, so they should be read as listing-specific rather than as one worldwide premiere date. Apple TV’s US listing identifies the episode as Season 2, Episode 22, gives a 23-minute runtime and lists July 4, 2025. Apple TV’s listing also identifies Japan as the region of origin and gives the series a TV-14 rating.
