Mariah Carey’s Glitter soundtrack was scheduled for release on September 11, 2001. That morning, Sara Botkin says she bought its CD at the World Trade Center mall before reporting for a temporary job at Aon Corporation in the South Tower. The stop delayed her: she was near an elevator when the first plane hit the North Tower, then left the complex before the South Tower was struck. Her account is a story of timing and survival—not proof that buying the CD alone caused her to survive.
How the Glitter CD entered Sara Botkin’s 9/11 story
In a 2026 PEOPLE report republished by AOL, Botkin recalled stopping at the Sam Goody in the mall beneath the World Trade Center to buy the newly released CD. She was working temporarily for Aon Corporation in the South Tower. “I was standing in line for the elevator, holding my new Glitter CD, when the first plane hit,” she said.
Botkin’s account places her in the concourse after the purchase when the first plane struck the North Tower. She then left the complex and got home before the South Tower was hit. An Out.com summary of her 2021 WPXI interview says she worked on the 105th floor. These are details from her reported recollection; they do not establish exactly how the timing of her purchase changed her movements or what would have happened had she gone straight to work.
Botkin herself resisted turning survival into a neat explanation. In the WPXI interview quoted by Out.com, she said she thought she was “really lucky,” while reflecting on the many people who did not make it out. The CD was part of the chain of events she remembered, but the stronger claim that the purchase alone saved her cannot be known.

Why Carey said Glitter was tied to a painful period
Botkin’s experience and Carey’s are separate stories connected by the album and date. Speaking to Jane Pauley for a 2020 CBS interview about her memoir, Carey described being in a dark place and said the album was supposed to come out on September 11—the same day she was released from a facility. She said, “I was in a very dark place that ended up almost completely destroying my life.” Her account connects the date to her personal crisis; it does not mean the album itself caused it.
Carey also described the wider strain around the project. In a 2018 Pitchfork interview, she said Glitter represented a time “when they almost killed me,” referring to a period when she was leaving Sony, fighting with her former husband Tommy Mottola, and changing labels. These are Carey’s retrospective words about a difficult chapter in her life and career.

The soundtrack date was not the film’s opening date
The soundtrack was scheduled for September 11, 2001. The film Glitter opened in theaters on September 21, ten days after the attacks, according to Out.com. Keeping those dates distinct matters: the album’s release coincided with the attacks, while the film arrived later.
Carey later reflected on the timing’s impact. Out.com quotes her 2005 interview with The New York Times: “I don’t care if it was the best one of my life, anything released the week of 9/11/2001 was not going to work.” The remark captures how the national tragedy overwhelmed the album’s launch.

How Glitter was reconsidered later
The soundtrack later gained a new audience among Carey fans. In 2018, Entertainment Tonight reported that fans’ #JusticeForGlitter campaign pushed the album to the top of the U.S. iTunes Album Chart. Carey said she could appreciate it nostalgically. That was a reported chart event in 2018, not a statement about its current ranking.
Botkin’s story gives the album a meaning Carey could not have anticipated: for one listener, the CD was in her hands during a narrow, frightening interval on September 11. The account is powerful without needing to claim more than it shows: Botkin says the purchase delayed her, she survived, and the precise counterfactual remains unknowable.
