Sebastian Stan plays Trump and Jeremy Strong plays Cohn. The film drew controversy over its portrayal of Trump, and the Trump campaign denounced it as “pure fiction” and threatened legal action. Whether the film’s scenes are historically verified is a separate question from either the director’s stated approach or the campaign’s reaction.
What is The Apprentice about?
The film follows a young Donald Trump’s ascent through his relationship with Roy Cohn, the lawyer and political fixer who becomes an important figure in the story. The Festival de Cannes lists the 2024 film, directed by Ali Abbasi, with Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as Cohn. Festival de Cannes film page.
Despite its title, this is a dramatic feature about Trump’s early career, not a documentary. Its account is shaped by the filmmakers’ selection and presentation of events.
Why is The Apprentice controversial?
The controversy centers on the film’s subject and portrayal of Trump, as well as the political dispute surrounding its release. After its premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, a Trump campaign spokesperson called the movie “pure fiction” and said the campaign would seek legal action, according to the Associated Press. That is the director’s description of the film’s research and screenplay, not independent confirmation of every scene or exchange. The available sources cited here do not provide a reliable scene-by-scene fact check. It is therefore more accurate to treat The Apprentice as a dramatized account informed, in the director’s view, by fact-checking—not as a complete historical record. The campaign’s “pure fiction” characterization is likewise an attributed political response, not a factual verdict.
